Most of the youngsters seeing a Helicopter often fascinate to fly helicopter once in their life. Helicopter pilots are in IAF and also in some private airline service providers. Today, we are going to discuss about how and where the helicopter pilots of IAF are trained.
If you dream to be a pilot in IAF, then there are different entries like CDS, AFCAT, NDA and NCC. And in all these entries the seats for flying branch is reserved. One can become fighter pilot, helicopter pilot and transport pilot through NDA after 12th, CDS after graduation, AFCAT and NCC special entry which is again after Graduation.
To become a pilot one should have to complete ‘Join Service Wing Training’ aka JSW followed by Stage 0 of 6 months, followed by stage 1of 6 months and then Stage 2 starts where specialization is carried out, where pilots are categorized in different fields i.e, some are categorized as fighter pilots, or transport pilots and some are helicopter pilot training.
Let’s understand the whole structure of training.
IAF has different schools for training purposes of the pilots. There are different arrangements for fighter pilots. And different for transport or helicopter pilots. Where the helicopter pilots are trained is called Helicopter Training School, which was established 1962 at Gurgaon, Haryana. In the same year being less advancement in Gurgaon or Palam, then in December 1962 it was shifted to Bumrauli, Central Air Command, Paryagraj the then Allahabad. Since then till 1967, then in 1967 it is again shifted to Jodhpur, Rajasthan. In 1967 in IAF for the first time Chetak helicopters were introduced.
The helicopter training school was there till 1973. And from 1973, it is again shifted to Air Force Academy, Hakimpet, near Hydrerabad. Here at Air Force Academy, Hakimpet, training of pilots of Air Force, Navy, Cost Guards, along with some pilots of neighboring countries is carried out. State of Art infrastructure in itself, this Helicopter Training School at Hakimpet, near Hyderabad and Secundrabad is in a large area along with Air Force Academy Dundigal, where Fighter Training School is situated.
