*The eight places associated with Mahatma Buddha, Lumbini, Gaya, Saranaya Kushinagar, Shravasti, Sankasya, Rajagriha and Vaishali were known as 'Ashtamahasthan' in Buddhism.

Location- Rajagriha (Saptaparni Cave)
Time- 483 BC
President- Mahakassapa Reign- Ajatashatru (Haryak dynasty)
Purpose The teachings of the Buddha were compiled into two pitakas, the Vinaya Pitaka and the Suta Pitaka.

2. Second- 

place- Vaishali
Time- 383 BC Chairman- Sabkamir (Sarvakamani)
Reign- Kalashoka (Shishunaga dynasty)
Objective- To resolve the differences regarding discipline, Buddhism was divided into Sthavira and Mahasandhik.

3. Third  - 

 Place Pataliputra
Time - 251 BC
President- Moggaliputtattis Reign- Ashoka (Mauryan Dynasty)
Objective- An attempt was made to provide stability to Buddhism by rendering strict rules against Sangha discrimination. The religious texts were finally edited and the third Pitaka Abhidhammapitaka was added.

4. Fourth-

Location- Kundalan of Kashmir
Time around the first century of Christ President - Vasumitra and Ashvaghosha (Vice President)
Reign - Kanishka (Kushan Dynasty) Purpose - Division of Buddhism into two sects Hinayana and Mahayana.

* Under the Gandhara style, most of the Buddha statues were createdwent. Probably the first Buddha statue was made under Mathura art.
