IHM Hyderabad: Providing a Global Platform for Students in Hospitality

The Indian hospitality and tourism industry is one of the largest employment generator and foreign exchange earning sector in the country. The Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report 2019 published by the World Economic Forum ranks India at the 34th place. Established in 1972, Institute of Hotel Management, Catering Technology, and Applied Nutrition, (IHM) Hyderabad, an autonomous institute under the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, offers courses in Hotel management which trains students to work in hospitality service establishments in areas such as hotel and restaurant administration, airlines, hospitals, retail, restaurants, cruise lines and even in multi-national companies (MNCs). Initially started as Food Craft Institute Society, Ihm Hyderabad today serves as one of the most desirable institutes for hotel management in the country.

IHM-Hyderabad believes in uplifting the students by inculcating moral values and making them the personality the world acknowledges. The institute believes in emphasizing intellectual activities, moral judgments, aesthetic judgments, self-realization, individual freedom, individual responsibility, and self-control to achieve their goal.

Courses Offered at the Institute

The institute offers many courses such as Bachelor of Science in Hospitality & Hotel Administration for three years and postgraduate diploma in Accommodation Operations & Management. It also offers craftsmanship course in Food Production & Patisserie for one-and-a-half year, craftsmanship course in Food & Beverage Service for six months as well as various courses offered under MoTs scheme of Capacity Building for Service Providers (CBSP), which are fully funded by Government of India.

Apart from the curriculum, IHM also presents four courses to create employable skills under the ‘Hunar Se Rozgar’ MM | 2020 02| program beneath CBSP sponsored by the Ministry of Tourism, which are Food Production, Food and Beverage Service, House Keeping and Bakery.

Sanjay Thakur is the Principal at the Institute of Hotel Management Catering Technology & Applied Nutrition, Hyderabad. Sanjay has over three decades of experience which played a significant role for effective college administration, student culture, management, planning, team dynamics and professional approach. His honours include the Unsung Hero by Accor Hotels, the first principal to be rewarded by the Rotary Club International and he is also greatly acknowledged by various banks, restaurants, and hotels for his contributions in enhancing their customer service through his development work.

Renowned hotel brands like Taj Hotels, Accor Hotels, Marriott Hotels, Hyatt, Hilton, IHG, Oberoi and others visit every year and offer management trainee and other positions to IHM’s students. McDonalds, KFC, Adani, Dominos, Metro and many other renowned international restaurant chains and retail chains recruit its students.

IHM Hyderabad has highly qualified and internationally trained staff. They have been trained by Laussane School of Hospitality, Switzerland and the faculty went to Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Spain for gaining exposure to international standards, organised by National Council of Hotel Management, Noida, an autonomous body Under Ministry of Tourism, Government of India.

The institute has empowered its students with several activities including maintaining excellent networking, PR parties, strong alumni network and improving employability skills by psychometric test workshops. IHM also invites guest speakers from the industry to educate students about the know-how of the industry. Apart from these, IHM also has an excellent placement record and is associated with National Entrepreneurship Network (NEN). IHM-Hyderabad ranked third in all India level surveys conducted by Global Human Resource Development Centre (GHRDC) Survey, ranked fifth by Outlook and India Today Survey, sixth by The Week Magazine and has received Special Award for Placement Performance, Best Award for Administrative Performance and Special Award for All-Round Performance by Ministry of Tourism, Government of India. Department of Tourism, Government of Andhra Pradesh also recognized IHM-Hyderabad for Award for Excellence. Additionally, IHM is also ISO certified and the students are bestowed from the interaction with prominent alumni.

IHM has the support of the ministry of Human Resources Department, Ministry of Tourism, India Tourism, and State Tourism. The government provides regular grants to upgrade and apply policies to the institute for the students to experience the savvy of the worldly hospitality industry. IHM Hyderabad is a member of the Federation of Hotels and Restaurants Association of India (FHRAI), South India Hotels and Restaurants Association (SIHRA), Hotels and Restaurants Association of Telangana State (HRATS) and Lausanne School of Hospitality through National Council for Hotel Management and Catering Technology (NCHMCT), which facilitates national and international networking for further expansion of the services and sharing of knowledge and technology. The Institute has also a tie-up with Welcomgroup Graduate School of Hotel Administration, Manipal.

The Institute has a tie-up with Rotary Club of Hyderabad through which the Rotaract club of IHM Hyderabad organises May social welfare events as part of the corporate social responsibility. The Rotaract club of IHM Hyderabad exhibited their passion to serve society by organising Diwali celebrations at old age homes, orphanages. They created awareness for hygiene and safety in rural villages and schools. They created awareness by conducting various competitions and awareness programmes on nutrition, breast cancer, Aids, World Animal Day and many more.

Fighting the Pandemic

The college has started practicing Covid-19 safety guidelines issued by NHCMCT, Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP), Government of India. In addition, IHM Hyderabad organised webinars, guest lectures, hotel tours, Covid protocols in the institute and hotels to adapt the necessary changes for safety of all the stake holders.

The student and faculty attended various webinars on Covid-19 guidelines. The institute is making every effort to use equipment and chemicals to sanitize areas and all the touch points as per the guidelines. The guidelines to wear mask, maintain social distancing, sanitise hands and areas are strictly followed to ensure safety of all the students, staff and visitors.

Training Students to Global Standards

The Staff of IHM are trained to International Standards of Hospitality education. They have exposure to hospitality standards in countries like Singapore, Indonesia, Switzerland, Spain, Malaysia and other countries.

The students and faculty undergo exposure to global standards of hospitality by attending workshops and guest lectures by hotel industry experts and industry exposure in renowned global brands. The courses are designed with contents matching global standards. The infrastructure and equipment are updated to match global standards.
