The one, the only, the Original: Pilsner Urquell…

Pilsners are among the most popular brews in the world and Pilsner Urquell is probably the biggest reason why.

Pilsner Urquell claims to be the first pilsner ever.  Who am I to argue? After all, “urquell” in the Czech language means “original”. It has been following the same recipe since 1842 when it was created by Bavarian brewer Josef Groll in Plzen, Czech. The history of brewing Beer in Plzen can be traced back to the 1300s. Founded by King Wenceslas II in 1295, Plzen became a center of Bohemian brewing after its founder granted its citizens the right to brew.  The rest as they say is history.

When you are the first pilsner or should I say “The Original”, you start off as the king and stay on top until someone knocks you off of your thrown.  Since 1842, there have been MANY imitators and challengers to the thrown; some arguably better interpretations than the original, but most pale in comparison. In fact, Pilsner Urquell is the inspiration for more than two-thirds of the beer produced in the world today. It is still the standard bearer against which all pilsners are compared.  So let’s see why.

It pours into a light golden color with a white foam that is not too thick and which quickly evaporates, leaving you with with a crisp and refreshing brew to cool you off on the hottest of days.  It has a nice malty flavor with spicy tones, and notes of honey with noticeable bitterness and medium carbonation.

This is not an overly complex beer.  If complexity is what you are after, then you may not like this beer. However, if you want to enjoy a lighter beer that is well done and refreshing, then you found the one or shall I say The “Original” one.

If you are looking to pair this with some good comfort food, consider a ham and cheese sandwich on a nice baguette or, of course, with some juicy bratwurst with mustard and a side of sauerkraut. The meal you enjoy with your Pilsner Urquell may leave you full and sluggish, but this beer will not.  It has a 4.4% ABV and 132 calories per 11.2 oz bottle.

I give this wonderful pilsner a 3.9 out of 5.0 on the Viduch Scale.

Stay Hoppy my Friends!!!

Cheers.
