Myanmar vendors told to sell military beer – or face consequences

Authorities in Myanmar are pressuring vendors to sell military-produced alcoholic beverages and cigarettes or Face Consequences. Restaurant owners in Yangon's Latha township were summoned by local ward administration officials and warned to sell these products. The military controls businesses that produce and distribute several alcoholic brands, as well as cigarettes. Rebel groups have warned merchants not to sell military-owned brands and threatened to seize and destroy them. The campaign is seen as an attempt by the cash-strapped junta to earn money amid international sanctions. It is unclear how authorities will punish those who ignore the order.
