Staying at The Breakers Hotel in Palm Beach – An Elegant, Historic Luxury Experience

Visiting Palm Beach County Florida year after year I have discovered what I want for my family and me to experience. And The Breakers Hotel has been on the top of my must-do list. We have visited the hotel two years ago, for a dining experience. But really, that was just a tease. Finally, after reading so much about it, this year we did it. And what an experience it was.

The Breakers Hotel Review – A Luxury Family Vacation

When you enter the Breakers you are instantly transformed back to the Flagler days of high society, elegance, and luxury that remains in very few hotels and resorts these days.

Every part of the hotel is carefully crafted with artistry and brilliant interior design.

It is so huge, that getting lost becomes part of the fun of staying here.

The hotel has seven floors with either ocean view rooms or rooms with views of the gardens and main entrance. We stayed on the fifth floor with unbelievable ocean views.

It’s hard to explain what it feels like to wake up to the ocean and pelicans everyday. Especially from our private balcony.

The top two floors belong to the Flagler Club. The price is a bit more, but the benefits of staying here are more exclusive.

1. Breakfast is included in a private dining room

2. Afternoon tea with hor d’oeuvres is served daily

3. You have access to a private terrace overlooking all of Palm Beach

4. And tons more

And for history buffs, like myself, this hotel tells tales in every nook and cranny.

The Breakers Palm Beach

The Breakers Hotel History

  • Henry Morrison Flagler built the Royal Poinciana Hotel on Lake Worth’s east shore in 1893.

  • It eventually became the world’s largest hotel, stretching more than 1,800 feet along Lake Worth.

  • Delighted that many of America’s most socially prominent families shared his love for Palm Beach, Flagler built a second hotel – the Palm Beach Inn in 1896.

  • A lot of people started demanding rooms “over by the breakers” shortly after it opened and the name stuck.

  • In 1897, Flagler enlisted Alexander H. Findlay, to design the first golf course in the state of Florida, adjacent to the Palm Beach Inn.

  • The fire of 1903 was the perfect excuse to make it twice as big and the name was officially changed..

  • Famous people like the Rockefellers, Vanderbilts, Astors, Andrew Carnegie and J.P. Morgan were frequent visitors.

  • On 1925 another fire destroyed the building. This gave the owners the chance to re-build it as the finest resort of its time.

  • More than 1,200 construction workers labored on The Breakers around-the-clock to meet the opening date.

  • Artisans were brought from Italy to do the paintings on the ceilings.

  • The Breakers Hotel Complex was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973

  • In 1996 the resort celebrates its Centennial anniversary as a Palm Beach and national landmark.

  • Today, the hotel and grounds occupy 140 acres.

  • The renewed hotel served as inspiration for the design of the Hotel Nacional of Havana.
