Grilled BBQ Sloppy Joe Melt

Grilled BBQ Sloppy Joe Melt

Family dinner meals can be such a struggle. In this house, we search for meals that are easy, tasty, and kid-approved. My family loves Sloppy Joes! Our favorite is this Grilled BBQ Sloppy Joe Melt. They are similar to regular Sloppy Joes but have a barbecue tangy taste and cheesy goodness that regular Joes just can’t compete with.

We start out with traditional ground beef and then began adding the condiments that bring the flavor to this meal. We cook the mixture slowly to help blend in the rich flavor. Once we have our Sloppy Joe mixture made, we take our sourdough bread, butter one side and layer some cheese on top of one slice and begin grilling them to toast the bread a bit before adding the mixture. We chose sourdough, but feel free to use your favorite bread, including Texas Toast. Once the bread has toasted a bit, add the sloppy joe mix and continue grilling to bring this meal to life. Grilling the bread until golden brown on both sides with all that cheesy goodness is a meal your family will be coming back for seconds.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 1/2 cup BBQ sauce
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 8 slices sourdough bread
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 8-10 slices mild cheddar cheese

Directions:

  1. In a large skillet, add ground beef and brown, breaking it up as it cooks. Add finely chopped onion shortly after the ground beef just begins to brown. Drain ground beef, as needed.
  2. Once ground beef is browned, add water, ketchup, mustard, BBQ sauce, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, and salt. Stir to combine.
  3. Cook over medium heat for 30 minutes. If mixture begins to get too dry, you can add 1/4 to 1/2 cup water.
  4. After mixture has thickened, remove from heat and set aside
  5. Spread butter over one side of each slice of bread.
  6. Set skillet over medium/low heat and place bread on skillet, butter side down
  7. Place cheddar cheese slice on one side of bread. Add sloppy joe mixture over the second slice of bread.
  8. Flip cheese covered slice of bread on top of the sloppy joe side and continue grilling for 3-4 minutes.
  9. Flip and repeat until both sides are golden brown. Repeat for steps for each sandwich
  10. Enjoy!
