Medical Packaging & Minimum Viable Box

Designing Medical Packaging is an interesting challenge. At Sunrise, we’ve worked with organizations creating packages used by people across the globe – and we like to think we’ve learned a thing or two about it.

While the overall look of the package is important, it becomes secondary for industries as regulated as the medical device world. At a minimum, packaging has to serve two main functions: it has have a sterile barrier system (SBS), and it has to have a protective barrier to maintain the sterile integrity. And that’s just the beginning.

Requirements for Medical Packaging

In addition, packaging for medical devices must meet ISO 11607 packaging standards. Remington Medical provides these suggestions.

  • All packaging should be manufactured with well-known, traceable materials.
  • Medical device packaging should be non-toxic, odorless, and non-leaching.
  • Devices should be free of holes, cracks, tears, creases, and localized thinning.
  • Devices should be intended for use in medical applications only.
  • Packaging designs should allow for sterilization and aseptic presentation and maintain it up to the point of use.

Additionally, these areas must also be considered:

  • Intended sterilization method
  • Intended use
  • Application and end user
  • Transportation
  • Storage time length and expiration date

We’re Ready to Help

It’s best to initiate a project focused on medical boxes as soon as possible. Timelines can easily extend past a target date to the complexity of these projects. Testing duration extensions and other obstacles can sneak up on the most diligent project managers. Sunrise can help by managing many parts of the packaging process in-house, which keeps costs and duration in check.
