How Good Is ChatGPT At Writing Job Descriptions?

There is a huge buzz surrounding the free AI tool called Chatgpt. Adding one million users in the first week since its launch, quicker than Facebook, Netflix, Spotify, and Instagram, this multipurpose tool interacts with users in a conversational manner. It has the potential to be used to write a job description, something which could save Hiring Managers a significant amount of time and hassle.

So, what is ChatGPT and is it any good at writing job descriptions?

What Is ChatGPT?

OpenAI’s ChatGPT (Chat Generative Pre-Trained Transformer) is an artificial intelligence that uses language models to have a dialogue with users in a conversational way. You can ask ChatGPT almost anything, from questions to completing writing tasks. The technology will generate a response or reject invalid or inappropriate requests. And, because ChatGPT can continue the dialogue, it can answer follow-up questions, create an alternative or more appropriate response, and admit to its mistakes.

ChatGPT is currently a free-to-use technology that continues to develop and improve using Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF). Many people are excited by the possibilities and this artificial intelligence is likely to become a paid tool as its ability and proficiency improve.

How Could Hiring Managers And Recruiters Use ChatGPT?

Hiring Managers, Recruiters, and other HR Professionals could explore using ChatGPT to:

  1. Write a job description
  2. Write a job advert for job boards
  3. Research job responsibilities, duties, skills, and qualifications
  4. Create job descriptions written in different languages
  5. Create an email response to job seekers
  6. Prepare questions for the application process/interview process
  7. Make job descriptions more interesting or exciting

Using ChatGPT To Write Job Descriptions

Our first test is to ask ChatGPT to write a job description. We asked ChatGPT to write a Catering Sales Manager job description.

As you can see below, ChatGPT will generate a description for the position, including relevant responsibilities and requirements. However, the written text is very generic for the industry and unlikely to engage, catch the eye, or excite job seekers making a job search.

AN EXCITING, FUN, AND ENGAGING JOB DESCRIPTION

For our next test, we asked ChatGPT to rewrite the job description to be more fun, exciting, and engaging. As you can see below, this improves job descriptions and makes them more appealing to prospective candidates making a job search.

Of course, ChatGPT can only produce job descriptions that are very general, making them suitable for most companies. However, companies and their recruiters will want to create job descriptions with more context, unique job facts, and candidate requirements.

ADDING CONTEXT TO JOB DESCRIPTIONS

Let’s start again and ask ChatGPT to create a Data Architect job description. As you can see in the text below, ChatGPT has created a generic job description with basic requirements.

For our next test, we gave ChatGPT more context on the company, team, desired career skills, knowledge, and qualifications. As you can see below, the job description is improved, talking about the specifics your company may desire.

ChatGPT Job Description Writing Conclusions

For certain jobs, ChatGPT can write acceptable job descriptions. To engage prospective candidates and find a qualified individual, Hiring Managers and Recruiters must include as much context as possible about the role, requirements, company, and team. At the end of the day, the quality of what you put into the chat window will determine what you get out!

What Are The Limitations Of ChatGPT?

While ChatGPT is a superb example of where the world is heading, finding success using artificial intelligence is largely down to the level of detail your team inputs when requesting an action. Even using specific details, ChatGPT still has limitations, including the following:

  1. ChatGPT can give incorrect but plausible-sounding answers
  2. Anyone else entering the same input can get the same answer
  3. Responses can be pretty generic and excessively reuse/overuse the same phrases
  4. Questions may need to be rephrased to get the desired output
  5. Where questions or requests are ambiguous, ChatGPT chooses to guess the best answer, rather than ask clarifying questions

Companies should use ChatGPT with careful human oversight and it certainly isn’t going to replace your HR team anytime soon. It should be viewed as an assistive tool that can help you improve your job description to stimulate interest and engage job seekers conducting a job search. It could reduce the time you spend performing repetitive writing tasks so you can focus on other tasks, such as reviewing that incoming job application.
