Rahul Gandhi was mocked by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on September 9 when it was said that the T-shirt he was sporting while participating in the “Bharat Jodo Yatra” cost more than 41,000 rupees.

The head of Congress did, however, have some supporters. One commentator asserted that Gandhi is not paying for his clothing with public monies and that the BJP’s post indicated that the party was “rattled” by the yatra.

The BJP released two tweets on Twitter under its official handle, one of which said “Bharat, Dekho,” Gandhi, and the other of which showed the price of a T-shirt similar to the one Gandhi was wearing. The Burberry T-shirt was listed as costing Rs 41,257.

The tweet prompted a response from Congress. “Hey… are you scared? Seeing the audience gathering in Bharat Jodo Yatra. Talk about the topic. Speak on unemployment and inflation. If we have to debate the clothing, then we should mention Modi Ji’s suit of 10 lakhs and glasses of 1.5 lakhs. Do BJP want to discuss this?” was the message.

“Just as the cost of Rahul’s clothing was revealed, so too should the cost of Modi Ji’s attire. since both PM Modi and Rahul Gandhi are members of the Lok Sabha. Why not for Modi if you can reveal the costs for Gandhi? Referring to PM Modi’s 2015 suit, which was rumoured to have cost 10 lakh, one person remarked in Hindi.

PM Modi donned a suit with stripes that had his name spelled out across each one. Later, it was revealed that Rameshkumar Bhikabhai Virani, an NRI businessman, had given Modi the outfit as a present.

How does it make any difference? said another Twitter user. Modi Ji also dresses well. Let’s all dress in such things. Do some specific criticism, but try not to be overly demeaning.
