Gloria Collins Dead, Trenton Bevel and Kerrick Bettie Arrested after Stolen Car Crash in Houston

 
HOUSTON, TX (October 10, 2023) — Officials identified 75-year-old Gloria Collins as the woman killed in a stolen car crash on Thursday, September 7.
 
According to the Houston Police Department, the crash took place in the 7500 block of Martin Luther King Boulevard at Van Fleet Street at about 10:20 a.m.
 
However, investigators said the incident started at about 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday. It happened when 18-year-old Trenton Bevel and 21-year-old Kerrick Chancellor Bettie carjacked a vehicle at gunpoint at the 8400 block of Monroe.
 
On Thursday, police tracked down the stolen vehicle 10 miles away on the 7800 block of Jutland. Police then tried to arrest suspects.
 
The suspects sped off, which triggered a pursuit. Due to the suspect’s speed, the officers lost sight of the car.
 
Minutes later, after the chase ended, the suspect crashed into three vehicles waiting at the stoplight.
 
Collins, who was inside one of the stuck vehicles, died in the crash. Authorities later discovered she was the mother of a Houston police sergeant.
 
Two other bystanders and the two suspects also sustained minor injuries. Paramedics transported them to a hospital.
 
Bevel, who drove the stolen vehicle, faces murder charges connected to the crash. Meanwhile, officers also charged Bettie with aggravated robbery for his role in the carjacking that led to the fatal collision.
