Muharram is a significant festival for the people belonging to Islam. They celebrate the day as New Year’s Day. Sunni Muslims keep fast the entire day and Shia Muslims Mourn on this day.
Significance of the festival
The 10th day of Muharram is known as the day of Ashura. In 2023, Muharram begins on 19 July and will go on until 29 July. Muharram is celebrated by both Shia and Sunni Muslims in different ways. Shia Muslims mourn throughout the festival for the demise of the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, Hussain Ibn Ali, who died at the Karbala battle.
Karbala is a popular destination in Iraq. Karbala battle occurred in 680 AD in which Hussain Ibn Ali got killed fighting the army of Yazid till he breathed his last. The day of Ashura is regarded as the occasion of remembrance of all the sacrifices done by Hussain. On this Moses along with his followers also gained victory over the Egyptian Pharaoh.

Celebration
Sunni and Shia Muslims observe Muharram or Islamic New Year differently. Sunni Muslims keep fasts throughout the festival and observe the day. However, Shia Muslims mourn throughout the festival in different ways. They hold public gatherings known as “Majlis.” They listen to sermons by religious leaders, listen to the highlights, stories, and recount the events of Karbala, pay homage to the martyrs, perform mourning gatherings, processions, and rituals at mosques, and express sorrow and grief.
They perform ceremonies that involve pounding their chests or self-flagellation. To communicate their sorrow, they beat their chests. Shias refrain from participating in and enjoying any festive occasions during this time. On the tenth day of Muharram or the Hijri New Year, a ‘fraud is observed. Imam Hussain wad remembered, who was the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad and the son of Hazrat Ali, was martyred in Karbala.
