Tragedy as Herdsman severs Kogi farmer’s hand, ear

The police in Kogi State have arrested a Fulani Herdsman for allegedly cutting off the hand and ear of a farmer in the Idah area of Kogi State.

Our correspondent learnt that the incident occurred on Sunday on a cassava farmland in the area, said to belong to a farmer identified as Okpanachi.

It was learnt that the herdsman during an altercation with Okpanachi, insisted that the farmer must allow his cows to graze on the latter’s farmland.

The suspect thereafter allegedly cut off Okpanachi’s hand and ear.

Our correspondent gathered that the herdsman, whose name had yet to be identified, narrowly escaped being lynched by an angry mob while escaping from Idah.

A witness said the human parts were allegedly found in the herdsman’s bag, while he was about to board a taxi and escape from the area.

He said, “The suspect had handed over his cattle to a fellow herdsman and was about leaving the area. He was waiting for a cab at the Ibro Park. It was some drivers in the area who suspected his impatience and demanded that his bag must be searched.

“He was questioned and he could not give coherent answers. When they searched his bag, they found a human hand and the crowd descended on him with a heavy beating. It was some soldiers that rescued him from the angry mob. Later on, after many enquiries, the parts were said to belong to Okpanachi, who is now down with a sickness.”

It was learnt that the suspect was taken to the Idah Police Division by the soldiers, where he was being held.

The Kogi State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP William Aya, could not be reached for comment as his line did not connect.
