No easy choices in Taiwan’s presidential polls

As Taiwan's Presidential elections approach, the Democratic Progressive Party's (DPP) Lai Ching-te, the incumbent vice president, faces no significant challenge from the opposition. Efforts are being made for a collaboration between opposition leaders Ko Wen-je of the Taiwan People's Party (TPP) and Hou Yu-ih of the Kuomintang (KMT), with the possibility of a joint ticket. However, obstacles remain as both leaders are not keen on taking a secondary role. The elections are expected to focus on local livelihood issues such as high housing prices and stagnant wages, which are important to younger voters.
