Police-reported crime is on the rise again, with violent crime at its highest since 2007

Police-reported Crime in Canada has increased for the second consecutive year, with violent crime reaching its highest level since 2007, according to a report by Statistics Canada. The Crime Severity Index (CSI) showed a five percent increase in violent crime in 2022, following a six percent increase in 2021. The rise in crime may indicate a return to pre-pandemic trends, as crime rates had been increasing for five years prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. The report also highlighted increases in homicide, sexual assault, robbery, and extortion, with Indigenous and racialized individuals disproportionately affected by violent crime.
