Israelis protest judicial reforms, Arab crime deaths

Protests continued for the 23rd straight week in Israel against controversial judicial reform plans that would curtail the authority of the Supreme Court and give politicians greater powers over the selection of judges. Demonstrators also criticised government inaction over a soaring crime wave affecting the country’s Arab minority, with over 100 people killed in crime-related violence in Arab Israeli communities since the start of the year. Organisers claimed more demonstrations would occur on Saturday across Israel. The hard-right government argues the changes are needed to rebalance powers between lawmakers and the judiciary.
