Al-Qaida's East Africa affiliate, al-Shabab, has claimed responsibility for a terrorist attack on a Beachside Hotel in the Somali capital of Mogadishu. The attack on the Pearl Beach hotel, which is popular with government officials, began on Friday evening and ended early on Saturday morning after a gunfight between security forces and militants. Nine people, including three soldiers, were killed, and 10 others were injured. Witnesses reported hearing gunfire and explosions. Last year was the deadliest for Somali civilians since 2017, with the Islamist group Al-Shabaab responsible for most of the deaths.
