BRIJ BHUSHAN SINGH – 30+ CASES, YET FEARLESS?

WFI PRESIDENT BRIJ BHUSHAN SINGH – WRESTLER’S ACCUSATIONS AND CASES ON HIM

Indian wrestlers who represented India at international levels are now on roads protesting for justice. Allegations of sexual assault made on Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, Wrestlers Federation of India.

In January 2013, a group of 30 Olympic wrestlers came forward to demand a disbandment of the Indian wrestlers federation. Wrestlers like Vinesh Phogat, Deepak Punia, Ravi Dahiya, Sakshi Malik, and Bajrang Punia along with other wrestlers went on to sit and protest for justice accusing the WFI president of sexually harassing female wrestlers.

They demanded that the government remove Brij Bhushan Singh from his post as the president of WFI and also run a CBI investigation on him. Vinesh Phogat accused Brij Bhushan of mental harassment and torture when she lost at the Tokyo Olympics and also stated that she was so traumatized by the President’s words that she tried to kill herself.

The now WFI chief is also an MP of the BJP. Brij was always portrayed as a reformer in the world of wrestling but these allegations are slowly revealing the darker side of him; which is yet to be proven.

Brij Bhushan is prominent in Uttar Pradesh politics and is called Bahubali Neta by UP. He was a politically powerful leader with a big criminal background; he served as an MP for the BJP five times and once as a member of the Samajwadi Party (SP).

Brij Bhushan Singh was an Avadh University law graduate and became a candidate for Lok Sabha from Balampur in 2004. However, he left BJP in 2008 to join the Samajwadi Party. Then he won representation in the Kaiserganj constituency on the SP ticket in 2009, but in the run-up to the 2014 parliamentary election, he switched to BJP and won the seat again.

If we look into Brij’s criminal records and history it is clear that it is not a new thing for Singh to be the main character in the controversies. In the mid-1990s, the BJP MP Brij Bhushan Singh was arrested for involving the gangster Dawood Ibrahim and assisting his associates, under the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act. The arrest had him spend several months in the Tihar Jail. He was also a part of the liquor mafia in the 1980s.

The powerful leader has four pending cases on him and it was stated that none of them are solved because either the witnesses failed to show up or nobody took up the case. Brij Bhushan has many charges on him which include – charges under section 322 of the Indian Penal Code for voluntarily causing harm to public servants, and also under section 171 H for his illegal payments concerning an election.

It was heard that Brij Bhushan was a robber before and used to steal bikes and cars before entering politics; Brij has a case against him under section 392 for robbery. He also has the background of a murderer where you can see a case registered on him under section 307 for attempt to murder.

Singh shifted to Balrampur in 2004 where he was replaced by Ghanshyam Shukla by the BJP. But a few days later we hear about the death of the Shukla in an accident and some state it to be an actual murder. Though Shukla’s death is still a mystery, there is some unclear report which says that the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had called and said “Marwaa Diyaa” which if translated means “you had him killed”.

Some part of his history shows that Brij has records of having been involved in gun fights. In an interview, Brij Bhushan Singh also confessed to having murdered a person who shot his associate named Ravindra and Brij called himself ‘Shaktishaali’. His statement says that in his lifetime only one murder is committed by him and that he shot the victim dead.

Brij also has a tragic history of his son naming him in a suicide letter before he shot himself. In the letter, his 22-year-old son Shakthi Singh blamed Brij for being selfish and never taking proper care of his children. In the heartbreaking suicide note, his son said “Our future looks dark” talking about their future as a family; “you were never a good father” for not caring about himself and his children.

Brij Bhushan Singh’s history is large if we keep aside his political career; his crime-o-meter on https://myneta.info/ (a website that gives details of Indian politicians along with their crime records) is showing Red which indicates that his crimes are way more. (https://myneta.info/LokSabha2019/candidate.php?candidate_id=11448 shows his crime-o-meter and records as of 2019 – in this, you can see that it is red while according to the 2004 meter, it was on orange)

Having so many criminal records Brij Bhushan Singh became an Indian politician cum chief of the Wrestling Federation of India. The question is “how”. And now that elections are coming, how is the ruling party BJP going to handle this issue of their MP as the main accused?
