Budget cars have traditionally had manual gears, but many purchasers increasingly prefer automatics. Why? Automatic transmissions are more comfortable to drive in congested cities. The hatchback, SUV, MPV, and sedan categories have adopted automatic transmissions in the sub-Rs 10 lakh category. This list presents sedans and MPVs with automatic gearboxes at this price point.

1) Tata Tigor

Cost: Rs 7.45-8.50 lakh

First up comes Tata Motors’ only sedan, the Tigor. XMA and XZA+ trims have 5-speed AMTs. This AMT requires patience and forethought, especially while overtaking, like most. Comfortable and capacious, the Tigor boasts a premium interior.

2) Maruti Suzuki Dzire

Cost: Rs 7.99-9.39 lakh

Maruti Suzuki’s Dzire VXi, ZXi, and ZXi+ compact sedans have 5-speed AMT gearboxes. The AMT wants to shift up and nods when doing so. Being a good all-rounder keeps the Dzire ahead of its rivals. The top-of-the-line ZXi+ automatic is pricey, but the Dzire is a great compact car.

3) Renault Triber

Cost: Rs 8.12-8.74 lakh

Only the RXT and RXZ versions of the Triber have a 5-speed AMT, like most cars on this list. Renault has slowed things down and made the gearshifts roll into each other to reduce AMT jerkiness. This is wonderful for slow driving but not for rushing. You don’t have new features at Rs 50,000 more than the Triber manual, but you do get a better mid-range and the convenience of not changing gears.

4). Honda Amaze

Cost: Rs 8.67-9.71 lakh

Only the Honda Amaze’s mid-spec S and top-spec VX versions have a CVT. The CVT works well with this engine’s responsiveness. The CVT keeps the engine in its powerband, making performance fast and easy. Smart, practical, and easy to drive, the Amaze scores well.

5) Hyundai Aura

Cost: Rs 8.75 lakh

Hyundai only offers a 5-speed AMT on the mid-spec SX+ Aura. The AMT device has a smooth creep function and a normal head-nod, although it’s better than some. The Aura is not the cheapest nor the largest car in its segment, yet it does everything well. Light controls and a smooth engine make it easy to use, and the new safety measures reinforce its case.

Conclusion

Due to their comfort in congested cities, automatic gearboxes are becoming more popular in the sub-Rs 10 lakh sector. Hatchback, SUV, MPV, and sedan segments show this pattern.

Tata Motors’ lone sedan, the Tigor, has a 5-speed AMT transmission on the XMA and XZA+ grades, making it roomy and practical. However, the VXi, ZXi, and ZXi+ trims of the Maruti Suzuki Dzire include a 5-speed AMT gearbox. A top-of-the-line ZXi+ automatic makes the Dzire an all-arounder, but it’s costly.

Top trims RXT and RXZ of the Renault Triber have a 5-speed AMT gearbox. This improves mid-range and lowers AMT jerkiness. Only the mid-spec S and top-spec VX Honda Amaze features a great CVT that complements the engine’s responsiveness.

The mid-spec SX+ Hyundai Aura has a 5-speed AMT. AMT units with smooth creep functions are better than others. The Aura is user-friendly with light controls and a smooth engine, but it is not the most inexpensive or spacious car in its segment. The new safety features bolster its case.
