Hapur lathicharge: Allahabad High Court constitutes judicial committee to address grievances of lawyers

The Allahabad High Court on Saturday constituted a judicial committee to address the grievances of lawyers regarding the Hapur police lathicharge incident.

In a special sitting today, the Bench of Chief Justice Pritinker Diwaker and Justice Tripathi constituted the committee and directed the Special Investigation Team (SIT), already constituted by the government of Uttar Pradesh, to look into the incident.

The committee, comprising Allahabad High Court judges, among others, would be chaired by Justice Manoj Kumar Gupta. It’s members include Justice Rajan Roy, Justice Mohd. Faiz Alam Khan, the Advocate General of Uttar Pradesh or his nominee, the Chairman of Bar Council of Uttar Pradesh and the President of High Court Bar Association.

The Bench, during an in-chamber sitting, passed the order on a petition filed by the Bar Council of Uttar Pradesh and its members in the suo motu cognisance taken by the High Court regarding the Hapur lathicharge incident.

It was pleaded that a committee be constituted by the Court in terms of the Supreme Court decision in District Bar Association Dehradun vs Ishwar Sandilya and others to enable the lawyers to bring forth their grievances.

The Bar Council further sought status report of the investigation conducted so far in the First Information Report lodged against the erring police officials involved in the incident.
