Early Life and Bio of Gene Simmons

Gene Simmons, also known as Chaim Witz, came into this world on August 25th, 1949, in Haifa, Israel. His parents, Florence Klein and Ferenc Yehiel Witz raised him.

During the Holocaust, his mother and uncle Larry Klein survived a Nazi concentration camp. When Gene was 8 years old, he moved to Jackson Heights, Queens, New York City, with his mother.

In the United States, he chose the name Eugene Klein and developed a strong interest in music after watching The Beatles on TV. His mother gifted him a used guitar, and he became skilled at playing it. Later, he switched to playing bass as it seemed easier for joining a band.

While in high school, Eugene formed his first band, initially called Lynx and later renamed Missing Links. After that, he joined The Long Island Sounds. Gene attended Sullivan County Community College briefly before transferring to Richmond College, where he earned an education degree.

He worked as a grade school teacher in Spanish Harlem and also as a personal assistant for the editors of “Vogue” and “Glamour” magazines. During this time, he changed his name to Gene Simmons in tribute to the rockabilly artist “Jumpin’ Gene Simmons.” He then joined a new band, Bullfrog Bheer, and they recorded a demo called “Leeta.”

Gene Simmons Career

Gene Simmons, using his stage name, met Paul Stanley and together they formed a band called “Wicked Lester.” After just seven shows, they signed a deal with Epic Records and recorded an album, but it was never released. Undeterred, Simmons and Paul decided to create a new band that would become iconic – “Kiss.”

They invited drummer Peter Criss and guitarist Ace Frehley to join them. After months of rehearsal, Kiss played their first show, adopting makeup as a form of artistic expression. They quickly gained fans and released their debut album in 1974.

Despite their live performances being praised, their first three albums received mixed reviews. Their popularity soared with a live album, and they continued to make music and perform.

In the 80s, Gene expanded his horizons, taking on acting roles and starting his own record label. Kiss released successful albums and embarked on tours. Gene also ventured into reality television with shows like “Rock School” and “Gene Simmons Family Jewels.”

Over the years, Kiss went through lineup changes and continued to captivate audiences. Gene Simmons even became a judge on a talent show in 2022.

Personal Life

Gene Simmons had relationships with Cher and Diana Ross in the past. He eventually married his partner, Shannon Tweed, in 2011 after dating for 28 years. They have two kids, a son named Nick born in 1989, and a daughter named Sophie born in 1992. They live in Beverly Hills, California.

Simmons is a big fan of science fiction and comic books. He has created his own science fiction fanzines and contributed to others. He also supported George W. Bush’s foreign policy and openly endorsed the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

However, he later regretted voting for Barack Obama and criticised his 2009 health care reforms. In 2012, he was in favour of Mitt Romney for president. In terms of giving back, Simmons is a strong advocate for ChildFund International.

He visited his sponsored children in Zambia, and he and his family received the MEND Humanitarian Award for their charitable work with Mending Kids International. Simmons also helped establish The Children Matter, an initiative that aims to improve children’s access to healthcare worldwide.

Real Estate

Since 1986, Gene has lived in a big mansion in Beverly Hills. It’s a huge house with 10 bedrooms and covers an area of 16,500 square feet. After considering inflation, he bought the property in 1984 for $1,327,500, which is about $3.1 million today.

Furthermore, he spent around $12 million over five years to build this mansion. In October 2020, Gene and Shannon decided to sell the mansion for $22 million. Eventually, in September 2021, they accepted an offer of $16 million.

They wanted to move to a 24-acre estate near Whistler, British Columbia, so they built a dream house there for $4 million. In March 2021, they got a new home in Malibu for $5.8 million, and a few months later, they bought a smaller mansion in Beverly Hills for $10.5 million.

They also got a large house in Henderson, Nevada, for $8.2 million in May 2021. Gene even bought the empty land next to it for about $2 million and planted over 130 trees there.

However, they didn’t spend much time in this house, so they put it up for sale in October 2021 for under $15 million. Ultimately, the property was sold for $11 million in 2023.
