Your co-workers don't need to know about your Depression

Disclaimer: This article might be triggering for people suffering from Depression.  My intention isn't to provoke or hurt feelings.

Howdy, Investigators 😎

Today let's talk about 'Depression'

What is Depression?

Where should I even begin?

That's a lot to take in. Depression is a state of mind in which the victim feels low with or without a trigger. The chemical imbalance in the brain causes these states to prevail. The chemicals are Dopamine & Seratonin. The strides of feelings that a depressed person goes through are hopelessness, inferiority complex, fear, helplessness & anxiety.

Loss of Motivation in doing work is rather prevalent.

If this goes for long then it could lead to suicidal tendencies.

We have got a good look at what it is capable of.

It deserves an entire blog post to merely talk about Depression in general.

In this post, we will investigate

Why Your co-workers don't need to know about your Depression

1. The problem persists in your mind, only you know what you're going through every single day. Depression is not general it is highly personalized.
As the problem persists in mind hence it is difficult for people to comprehend. Plus there's also stigma attached to it due to the word 'MENTAL'.

2. There are imposters out there who pretend to be depressed to get attention. You could easily appear as one though you are not.

3. Your vulnerabilities once revealed can be exploited by your co-workers who despise you. They can falsely levy accusation that they delegated a task to you that you didn't finish. As you deny that accusation they will make the point that your depression caused you to disremember it. There are many other ways your vulnerabilities can be exploited.

4. Not understanding the depth of the despair depression or anxiety plagues, your co-workers might casually make fun of your disability. And that might leave you devastated. And for them it's just casually having fun & chillaxing.

5. Your every decision & action would be closely speculated by your co-workers to find loopholes so that they can pass insensitive remarks.

6. Some colleagues of yours out of genuine intention will keep giving you advises getting your shit together. Which at times you will find annoying. Because those pieces of advice will be like,

You should be just happy, socialize, go out more often. Their intentions are good, but it will surely annoy you.

You're always on the verge of breakdown already.

The essence of this blog post isn't to scare you away. I'm a huge fan of sharing & caring.

Our education system never bothered educating us about it's consequences. If only it had then we might have been living in a civilization where people respected the boundaries, had humility & empathy towards such disabilities.

Things might turn the other way around, your co-workers might make the workspace a safe place for you instead.

It can be daunting having to work with depression & anxiety bottling up the feelings. Making lame excuses for deficiencies at the quality of work you produce.

What more needs to happen is that corporations at large needs to be educated about this epidemic. It's a recurring & prevalent phenomenon occurring in the workplace.

Not making necessary arrangements might create a hostile environment at work which in no way facilitates productivity.
