Hamas critique removed from Palestinians’ Abbas comments on Israel attack

The Palestinian Authority’s official news agency, WAFA, initially published comments by President Mahmoud Abbas criticizing Hamas but later removed any reference to the militant group without providing an explanation. The comments were made during a phone call between Abbas and Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, where they discussed Israel’s bombardment of Gaza following Hamas’ attacks on Israeli cities.

The original WAFA report included a line stating that Hamas’ policies and actions do not represent the Palestinian people, and that the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) is their sole legitimate representative. However, several hours later, this phrase was adjusted to emphasize that the policies, programs, and decisions of the PLO represent the Palestinian people, without mentioning any specific organization.

The reason for removing the reference to Hamas remains unclear, and there has been no comment from Abbas’ office or WAFA. Hamas has also not provided any immediate response. It is worth noting that Abbas has long been opposed to Hamas, which took control of Gaza in 2007, leading to the ousting of Fatah party forces loyal to Abbas. Despite attempts at reconciliation, the rivals have been unable to reach a breakthrough.

Abbas, who also heads the PLO, participated in past U.S.-sponsored peace talks with Israel. During his call with Maduro, he expressed his rejection of civilian casualties on both sides and called for the release of civilians, prisoners, and detainees.
