Sometimes, you may tend to take advice from your acquaintances, who have faced interviews before, but it’s not necesssary that you will be asked the same kind of questions. So, realising the importance of this matter, we have mentioned a general set of guidelines that will help you to prepare yourself for the interview in an efficient manner.

Here’s a brief step by step guideline to ensure a successful job interview:

Prior to the Interview:

  • Research about the company

One should be properly acquainted with the company policy, history and other important details of the organisation which he/she has applied for. You can go through company’s website, its annual report and other magzine articles so as to gather all the information that you can. One may also talk to the existing employees in order to get a brief idea about the company environment.

  • Anticipate the probable questions by the interviewer

Some questions like what are your strengths and weaknesses, where do you see yourself after 5 years, why should we hire you, are always asked in a job interview. So, you can prepare yourself for such questions beforehand.

  • List down the questions that you want to ask from the interviewer

An interview is not always about the interviewer asking questions from the candidate, but vice versa as well. However, that doesn’t mean that you fire bullets of irrelevant questions on the person. Rather, your questions should be of such a nature that it shows how much interest you take in the job and your desire of being a part of that organisation.

  • Practice for the interview at home

A few days before the scheduled interview, involve your friend in your practice sessions and make sure to answer the questions with the same seriousness that is required in the interview. This will help you a lot to gear up for the big day.

At the Interview day:

  • Dress up properly

While going for an interview, make sure that your appearance is completely professional because it’s something that says a lot about your personality. One should wear subdued colors like black, blue and grey. Moreover, your clothes should be wrinkle free as well as spotless clean.

  • Reach before time

Collect all your required documents in a folder and reach the destination on time. It’s also necessary to take sufficient sleep the day before your interview and have a nutritious breakfast before stepping out of your house.

  • Be honest and quick in replying

While answering the questions, don’t be too short or too lengthy with your answers. You should also ensure that you don’e lie about anything as every company has its sources for keeping background checks.

Post the interview:

  • Exchange pleasantries with the interviewer

Have a confident hand shake with your interviewer even if you think your performance wasn’t up to the mark, don’t let it show on your face. In case you don’t get any reply as to when will you be informed about the final decision, you can politely ask the interviewer, ‘When can I expect a call regarding my position for this job?’

  • Send a thank you mail

Sending a short thank you note to the interviewer, will make a good impression on the organisation and it will help you to stand apart from other candidates. Be specific and avoid using lengthy content. If there’s something that you forgot to ask, you can even mention that in the mail.

  • Follow-up the interviewer through a mail

If you don’t get any notification from the company after the designated time period or two weeks of interview, you can send an email to the concerned authority simply asking about the verdict. Be polite and genuine, but don’t act desperate to get the job.
