Pianists perform at their hometown before national tours

Mention popular musicians from Utah and you probably won’t miss Mormon Tabernacle Choir, the Osmonds, David Archuleta, or, more recently, Neon Trees.
Don’t forget about their excellence when it comes to playing the piano. Aside from being the place of the Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition, Utah is also the hometown of the 5 Browns and Josh Wright. Both will Perform concerts this weekend before heading to concert halls all over the world.
Wright, a University of Utah pianist, will perform in Sandy Friday night before going to make his debut at New York City’s famed Carnegie Hall. The 5 Browns will perform at Kingsbury Hall this Saturday in the midst of a national tour.
In separate interviews, the pianists claimed Utah will always be home, no matter where their travels take them.
The 22-year-old master’s student at the University of Utah, Josh Wright says “My life goal has been to play Carnegie Hall,” He will realize that dream in December.
But before leaving for New York City, the Sandy native will perform for local audiences as part of the Excellence in the Community series showcasing local musicians. For the concert, he plays to perform works from Liszt, Mozart, Ravel and Chopin.
In the meantime, he is working on his first major-label recording, a project on Shadow Mountain Records (the Deseret Book record label) inspired by two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in South Dakota and Wyoming. With the release date set for April, the collection will comprise Christian hymns he has arranged for classical piano.
Coincidentally, the motivation to become a classical pianist comes from seeing one of the 5 Browns, Ryan Brown, perform with the Utah Symphony when Wright was younger.
