A prominent Brazilian plastic surgeon, known as “Dr. Bumbum,” was reportedly apprehended by authorities Thursday after being on the run amid a patient’s death following a procedure to enlarge her buttocks.
Denis Furtado, 45, is famous for his treatments, according to BBC. He is prominent on social media where he has garnered more than 600,000 Instagram followers and posted photos of his surgeries to Facebook as well. He has also posted videos on YouTube with dieting advice.
“Dr. Bumbum,” reportedly gave bank manager Lilian Calixto butt injections at his Rio home on Saturday, according to Time. She fell ill during the procedure and Furtado rushed her to the hospital, where she died hours later.
Authorities say Furtado disappeared after he dropped the woman off at the hospital and a judge issued a warrant for his arrest. Authorities also arrested Furtado’s mother, Maria de Fatima Barros, who worked with him.
Police have not released the woman’s exact cause of death. Furtado’s lawyer said in a statement that “any conclusion regarding the death of Lilian Calixto and my client’s responsibility in this fatality is premature.”
