Our hearts are broken as we mark a week since the beginning of the war. We hope the fighting ends swiftly and healing can begin. |
Israel's military ordered the 1.1 million residents of northern Gaza — about half of the territory's population — to evacuate to the south within 24 hours, a sign that Israel could soon launch a ground invasion. The U.N. said evacuating so many people safely is impossible to do that quickly and urged Israel to rescind the order. The war, now in its seventh day, has killed more than 1,300 people in Israel and more than 1,530 in Gaza. Hamas said Israel's bombardment has killed 13 of its 150 hostages. |

U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin arrived in Israel today to show support for Israel's war with Hamas and to learn what additional weapons and ammunition the country needs. The White House said U.S. citizens in Israel can begin leaving the country today on chartered flights. |

STEVE SCALISE: The House Majority Leader ended his bid to become House speaker. Scalise narrowly won a House Republican vote as their speaker nominee, but could not persuade members who backed his rival, Rep. Jim Jordan, to support him in the full House. It's not clear if Trump-endorsed Jordan can win over Scalise supporters or those still loyal to Rep. Kevin McCarthy, who was ousted last week.

BOB MENENDEZ: The New Jersey senator — the chair of the Foreign Relations Committee until his indictment on bribery charges last month — was newly charged with being an unregistered foreign agent of Egypt. He allegedly intervened on behalf of Egyptian business and government in exchange for cash, gold and a luxury car. |

Social Security benefits will increase 3.2% next year, or about $50 more per month for the average recipient. The cost-of-living adjustment is less than half the size of this year's increase, which administrators made to ease the pain of inflation. In just the last 12 months, inflation has fallen from 8.2% to 3.7%. |

Nearly a month into the United Auto Workers strike, 36% of Americans sympathize with workers demanding higher pay over GM, Ford and Stellantis, while just 9% sympathize with Detroit's Big Three over workers, according to an Associated Press poll. About one-quarter sympathized with both equally and the rest with neither. |

Sony is releasing a PlayStation controller in December that's designed for people with a range of disabilities. Disabled gamers have been working with the company since 2018 to develop the Access controller, which has a wheel of programmable buttons and a small joystick. Microsoft released an accessible controller for its Xbox console in 2018. |

A rare "ring of fire" eclipse — showing just the outer ring of the sun — will be visible Saturday morning in a narrow path between Oregon and southeast Texas. If you're in its path, you'll have about five minutes between 8 and 9 a.m. PDT to see it, depending on where you live. (Make sure to wear eye protection!) Call it the Johnny Cash Solar Eclipse. |
Wear eye protection to view the eclipse, otherwise it burns, burns burns... (Giphy) |

Presales for Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour film were so strong that they broke AMC Theatres' record for single-day ticket sales before a single Swiftie entered a theater. While no one expects other artists to sell as many tickets as Swift or Beyoncé when her Renaissance tour film comes out in December, interest in them has movie theater owners considering other types of events they might screen. |

A baby turtle that just hatched at the Sedgwick County Zoo in Kansas is good news not because it's cute — although it is — but because its species "has not been seen in the wild for more than a decade," as the zoo wrote on Facebook, calling the birth "an important milestone for conservation." |

This weekend we recommend two funny films with light spooky vibes, one legitimately terrifying film and, for something completely not Halloween-y, a YouTube channel for a goofy British game show. |
One thing we love: Our colleague getting the recognition she so deserves. One thing we hate: The morning coffee guy seems to question our sanity because we're still ordering iced coffee when it's 50 degrees outside. One thing we ate: Flavor-Blasted Goldfish. (Xtra Cheddar flavor, of course.) |
