Israel's military said it regained control over parts of southern Israel from Hamas militants, as Israeli airstrikes pounded entire Gaza neighborhoods to rubble. About 2,000 people have been killed since Saturday when Hamas launched its surprise attacks. The organization, which leads Gaza and is considered a terrorist organization by the U.S. government and others, continues to hold Israelis hostages. Meanwhile, airstrikes destroyed Gaza's border crossing with Egypt, which was the only way for food, water, fuel and medicine to enter the territory of 2.3 million people. |

President Joe Biden condemned Hamas for attacks of "sheer evil" that have killed hundreds of civilians in Israel, including 14 Americans. In a speech on the war, Biden said he believes Americans are among the dozens of hostages taken by Hamas, and that "as president I have no higher priority" than their safety. At his direction, the U.S. has been sharing intelligence and military expertise with Israel and is looking for more munitions and equipment to send. |

HOUSE SPEAKER: As they head into a closed-door vote today, House Republicans appear split over who should replace deposed speaker Kevin McCarthy. Rep. Steve Scalise is the highest-ranking Republican since McCarthy lost his job last week, and Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan is backed by former President Donald Trump. Voting could take hours or even days, lawmakers said. REP. GEORGE SANTOS: The New York Republican faces new charges that he stole the identities of campaign donors and then charged their credit cards with tens of thousands of dollars, wiring some of the money to his personal bank account and the rest to his campaign, prosecutors say. The 23-count indictment supersedes the one filed in May. |

The Wall Street Journal reporter lost an appeal in Russian court to be released before his espionage trial, leaving him imprisoned until at least the end of November. Gershkovich, the first American reporter charged with spying since 1986, denies the allegations. Analysts suspect Russia of detaining him as a pawn for a future swap with Russian prisoners in the U.S. |

Walgreens pharmacy staff members are walking off the job this week at more than 300 of nearly 9,000 locations to protest management understaffing pharmacies while increasing workloads with Covid-19 testing and vaccinations. Other pharmacies have been short-staffed ahead of a cold and flu season expected to be even busier than normal with Covid and RSV vaccines. |

The average score on the ACT college admissions test fell to 19.5 out of 36, its lowest level since 1989. Students in the class of 2023 entered their freshman year in 2019, months before the Covid-19 pandemic would upend their education for months to well over a year. But as any student who's taken AP Stats could tell you, we need more data than that to show causation. |

WHAT THE NHL: The puck dropped on the first three games of the pro hockey season, with defending Stanley Cup champion Las Vegas defeating Seattle 4-1. Stepping back from the NHL's past support of LGBTQ+ rights, the league has banned players from altering their uniforms or equipment to celebrate themed nights, including Pride, after several players refused last season to wear a rainbow-colored warmup jersey. The league known for in-game fistfights was worried about the distraction of warmup jerseys. MARY LOU RETTON: The Olympics gymnastics champion is suffering pneumonia and "fighting for her life" in intensive care in Texas, her daughter reports. Retton, 55, became an American icon when she won the gold medal in the 1984 Summer Games in Los Angeles. This comes only days after American gymnastics superstar Simone Biles won her sixth all-around world title while leading the team in its seventh consecutive gold medal. |
