Israeli warplanes continue to pound the Gaza Strip today in retaliation for Hamas' terrorist attacks across southern Israel Saturday. The unrelenting bombardments are hitting downtown Gaza City, where Hamas is headquartered. The total death toll in four days has climbed to 1,600 — but it's unclear how that correlates with Israel's report of 1,500 dead Hamas militants found in Israeli territory. More than 150 soldiers and civilians, including children and the elderly, are being held hostage in Gaza, and Israel has activated 300,000 reservists in a mass mobilization.

The U.S. reports that the first round of munitions and military equipment is "making its way" to Israel in its war with Hamas. The State Department said at least 11 Americans were killed during the attacks over the weekend and more remain missing — whether they are dead, in hiding or were taken as hostages is unclear. President Joe Biden is expected to give formal remarks on the attacks from the White House this afternoon.

Striking United Auto Workers at GM, Ford and Stellantis were joined by 4,000 Mack Truck workers who walked off the job after overwhelmingly rejecting their separately negotiated contract. The UAW voted Friday to hold off on adding more Big Three factories and warehouses to the strike after GM agreed to include electric vehicle battery factories to the union's national contract.

Infighting isn't helping Republicans decide who will replace ousted House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, as a meeting Monday resulted in little more than anger and the blame game. Steve Scalise or Jim Jordan are the serious speaker candidates, but McCarthy apparently isn't going away quietly. "Whether I'm speaker or not ... I can lead in any position I'm in," he said. 

Vermont State Police asked residents to check their security cameras for footage of a man whom they suspect of killing a former college dean. Honoree Fleming, 77, was found fatally shot on a trail near Vermont State University last week. Fleming was a retired professor and dean at a college that is now part of VSU. Her widow is Ron Powers, a Pulitzer Prize-winning and bestselling author.
