NFL debunks sideline spy fears after viral Bears-Commanders video

One eye-catching moment of the Bears’ 40-20 win over the Commanders on Thursday night sparked suspicion from some fans.

The broadcast zoomed in on Bears offensive coordinator Luke Getsy just as an unidentified person with a Commanders phone case lurked behind him, appearing to be taking a photo or recording in Getsy’s direction — or perhaps toward Chicago’s playbook.

But any thought of a brewing scandal was shot down by NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy, who told Pro Football Talk that the unidentified person was Ravin Caldwell — an NFL Uniform inspector who previously played for the Commanders from 1987-1992 — and not a sideline spy.

McCarthy further clarified that part of the uniform inspector’s job includes taking photos throughout the game and uploading them to the NFL’s system.

Uniform inspectors are sideline regulars, who typically played for the home team in the past, according to the outlet.

McCarthy felt the situation was blown out of proportion, as Getsy “was well beyond the bench area around the 20 when the broadcast zoomed in on that shot.”

Each game is assigned two uniform inspectors, one on either side of the field.

According to the NFL’s website, the uniform inspector’s job is to “make sure that every player in violation of the rules is aware of it and has an opportunity to correct it.”

But this time, it only sparked confusion during the Bears victory at FedEx Field.

Chicago’s win snapped a 14-game losing streak, and DJ Moore caught 230 of Justin Fields’ 282 passing yards while adding three touchdowns.

Postgame, Magic Johnson — one of the Commanders’ co-owners following their recent sale to a group led by Josh Harris — blasted Washington on X, formerly known as Twitter, for their poor play.

“Tonight the Commanders played with no intensity or fire,” Johnson wrote in his social media post. “We didn’t compete in the first half and got down 27-3 heading into halftime.
