The judges of the show include Vikas Khanna and Ranveer Brar, who are joined by Garima Arora, the first-ever female chef to be a judge on the show. The cooking competition show is a nationwide quest to find the best ‘home cook’ and draws out some of the most brilliant chefs from across India. The judges sample recipes from various cuisines that the contestants prepare in their search for India’s ‘MasterChef’. The show is produced by Endemol Shine India and it is directed by Neeraj Shetty.

Continuing the immunity pin challenge, we find Priyanka to be the only one left at the end of the two rounds – which included making a charcuterie board and an egg ravioli. Nayanjyoti and Sachin were eliminated at each round respectively and now there’s a last round left to win the pin.

The judges announce that to get the pin, she has to compete with a professional chef and if she fails, the pin will go to no one. The chef is revealed to be Manav Khanna, who works at Chef Garima’s restaurant in Bangkok as the senior sous chef. Since Priyanka is against an already established chef, she is given two advantages for fair play.

The first advantage was the head start of 10 minutes, which means Priyanka got 70 minutes to cook her dish, while Chef Manav got 60 minutes. The second advantage was that she can choose between the two ingredients basket to cook from. Out of the two, she chose the basket which had ingredients for a dessert, as that’s her expertise.

For today’s challenge, judges were sent out of the kitchen and they were not allowed to see or even know – who was cooking which dish. Instead, the contestants in the gallery took on the role of the mediator and made the announcement for the time, when to start/stop etc. While Priyanka started cooking, Chef Manav had to wait for 10 minutes and the other contestants asked about his experience, working with Chef Garima.

Throughout the cooking time, one could easily see the difference between a home cook and a Professional chef, by looking at their counters. While Manav was simultaneously cleaning and putting everything in place, Priyanka’s counter was a chaotic mess, as she was also running around to finish her dish.

Once the time was over, the judges were presented with both their dishes, without telling them who made it. At first glance, they comment that it’s hard to distinguish as both are visually appealing and liked the presentation. But going into details, Chef Vikas didn’t like the placement of the cherry with the stem intact. Also, the way she had plated the elements in a triangle shape was not a good choice.

While the judges found Manav’s dish to be eye pleasing with its simplicity. He made a kalakand with smoked fruits and a jaggery caramel sauce. In terms of taste, the judges found it too sweet and lacking textures but it was comforting nonetheless. Priyanka had made a dish called pink passion, which included pink pepper cranberry parfait with praline and coffee & pecan crumble.

The judges commented that there were too many elements and that could confuse the person, where to start from or what to pair with. Based on the tasting the judges gave each dish some points out of 10 and the dish with more points will win the competition. Chef Vikas gave Manav’s dish 8.5 points, Chef Garima gave 7 points and Chef Ranveer gave it 7.5 points – making it 23.

While to Priyanka’s dish, Chef Vikas gave a 7, Chef Garima gave a 7.5 and lastly chef Ranveer gave 7.5 points, making it 22 points in total. Due to one less point, she didn’t win the pin and remains in its box. But the immunity pin challenge seems to continue again in the next episode, as the contestants are given a second chance to win it.

They were presented with 16 boxes of spices, which were covered from the front and only by smelling it, they had to guess. The contestants who guessed the most will move forward, while some will be eliminated from the challenge. Nayanjyoti, Aruna, Priyanka, Deepa, Suvarna and Kamaldeep were able to guess most of them correctly. Gurkirat, Sachin and Santa were however eliminated due to wrong guesses.

Final Thoughts: MasterChef India Season 7 Episode 33

Honestly, I don’t know what even was the purpose of these 3 episodes, when we are left with absolutely no winner. As I said in the last episode’s review, the creators are just dragging the show at this point. It was just a waste of time with no resolution, given that the home cooks will be competing again for the pin.

They should have ended it yesterday by giving Priyanka the pin and used the concept of competing against a professional chef as a different challenge. They could have chosen 6-7 home cooks as they did with the spice smell test and then make those home cooks compete against professional chefs. This could have easily been stretched for two episodes and at least would have been interesting to watch and meet other renowned chefs.

MasterChef India Season 7 is currently streaming on SonyLIV and a new episode is released from Monday to Friday at 9 PM.
