Around Iceland with Owen & Tony

11 day workshop package

We explore many of Iceland’s most famous landmarks.  Owen drives around the ring road with a geology commentary and amazing facts about the formation of the landscape.  Your photography instructor is Tony Prower who will fully assist you and help you to develop your landscape photography skills.  Over 9 days of diverse Nature and conditions, you will learn how to use your digital camera better and get the best out of your lenses.  All levels of photographer are welcome as well as any type of camera.  This workshop package includes 2 nights in a Reykjavik Hotel either side of a 9 day adventure around Iceland.

Northern Lights

All of our overnight hotels are in good locations for Aurora hunting. We would expect at least 2 good opportunities on this trip.

Glacier Ice

We spend quality time around the glacier lagoons of the Vatnjokull glacier. This includes quality time on the diamond ice beach. On this trip we will attempt a sunrise on the ice beach and a sunset on the lagoon.

Black sand beaches

Iceland has mainly black sand beaches because the sand is volcanic.  We visit some of the most famous, including the beach at Vik with the famous Reynisdrangar sea-stacks.  The diamond ice beach at Jokulsarlon is an incredible place to photograph glacier ice on black sand.

Coastlines

Iceland has some dramatic coastlines and because we are driving around Iceland, we are never to far from an incredible coastal scene.  The dragon coat of East Iceland and the Volcanic coastline of Snæfellsnes are some of the best in the country.

Hot spots

We visit a few geothermal zones on our photo tour around Iceland. The most famous is Geysir, the home of the Geyser. You will have a lot of fun capturing the various stages of a Geyser eruption.

Waterfall of the Gods

Godafoss is the waterfall of the Gods. We visit this impressive waterfall a couple of times on this tour. We hope to catch some sunset colours and some morning light when we are in the North of Iceland.

11 day Itinerary

Note: Weather and road conditions can affect the itinerary.

Day 1

Transfer from Keflavik international airport to your hotel with the flybus ticket. Arrival in Reykjavik.  If you get here early you can explore the Capital of Iceland.  We meet in the evening for a traditional Icelandic meal at our central Reykjavik Hotel.  During dinner we will discuss the route and itinerary for the trip as well as safety preparations.  Then enjoy some of the Reykjavik nightlife, or relax at the hotel.

Day 2

Day 3
We head out after breakfast to a sunset on the diamond ice beach. After a heart-warming Icelandic lunch, we can explore other glacier lagoons and the incredible glacier landscapes or Skaftafell National Park. Hike to Svartifoss as well as landscape stops around the glacier tongues. Hotel for image processing/ rest period, then Jokulsarlon or Ice Beach for Sunset. Evening meal at Hali. Northern Lights if conditions are good.

Day 4
We leave the Vatnjökull region and head East to the town of Höfn where we can enjoy lobster soup for lunch before exploring the waterfalls and coastline of Iceland’s East fjords. We head further East to explore local landscapes, reindeer, horses, Vestrahorn & Eystrahorn Mountains. Check into our hotel then catch some evening light & Northern lights in the East Fjords.

Day 5
Explore some more of the East fjords in the morning. After lunch in Egilstadir, we head further North with the chance of seeing Dettifoss waterfall. We check into our Myvatn hotel for the evening.

Day 6
Sunrise somewhere on lake Myvatn. After breakfast we can explore the geothermal landscape including bubbling mud, huge craters, lava fields and caves. Lunch then image processing/ rest period. In the afternoon we visit the Godafoss waterfall with the hope of a sunset at the waterfall of the Gods.

Day 7
We visit Godafoss again after breakfast. Then we continue to Akureyri – the capital of the North. We continue through some beautiful valleys to our hotel in Hvammstangi. We visit the Kolugil gorge and waterfall on the way and then head out to Hvitserkur for sunset photography.

Day 8
This day we start heading South as we visit the craters at Grabrok and the waterfall complex at Hraunfossar. In the afternoon we head towards our hotel in Grundarfjordur and spend the evening photographing Kirkjufell and Kirkjufellsfoss. Sunset & Northern Lights at Kirkjufell.

Day 9
West to the Snæfellsness Peninsula. We spend the day exploring old fishing villages, stunning coastlines, historical churches and the amazing Mountain/waterfall combination at Kirkjufellsfoss. We stay at a hotel close to Kirkjufell to increase your chances of a Sunset, sunrise or Northern lights with the famous mountain.

Day 10
After an early start at Kirkjufellsfoss we head to a photographer’s paradise at Thingvellir National Park.  Set up your camera gear between the continental plates at the Oxararfoss waterfall.  From there we take the road to Geysir.  Here you will have plenty of opportunity to capture the erupting Strokkur before a photo stop at the huge Gullfoss waterfall.  Your Lunch stop could be at Geysir or Gullfoss.  Then visit lesser known waterfalls, horses, craters etc.  We head back to our Reykjavik hotel for a relaxing Icelandic meal.

Day 11
Departure day. After breakfast, you can take the flybus back to the airport or extend your stay to explore Reykjavik city with your new camera skills.

Please Note:

Heavy Schedule
Please note: the days are long late March/ early April. We have to conform to Iceland’s driving regulations which stipulate 11 hour rest periods overnight for our driver. Going out for Sunrise will be a careful decision because we are really stretching the rules. We can’t realistically schedule Sunrise shoots when we are changing hotels because the driver will have no opportunity for a break and this will violate the number of hours he is driving. If there are good conditions for Northern lights and we go out in the evening, this will be a trade off for the Sunrise. Both Northern lights and Sunrises can be nice at the hotels we have booked.

Image processing:
As we could be out until 7-8pm, I feel it is best to schedule image processing help sessions during the day when the light is not so good. You are free to take advantage of the rest period or come and get some help with lightroom & photoshop.

Show and tell
After some days of shooting and processing, we could have show and tell sessions in the evening where we can share our favourite pictures with each other.
