How Can You Identify Your Job Strengths?

If you have ever been to a job interview, you probably have already heard this question – “What are your strengths?”

Incidentally, this question is one that is more common than you would realize, and while you could be asking this to yourself, your future employer may ask you the same too.

Faisal Amin is the Founder of KIRA, a retail ERP solution for retailers that helps them to control and optimize their business. Just like a lot of other youngsters out there, Faisal too feels that the question about your Job Strengths is one that almost everyone has asked themselves, or been asked about, at some point in their career. This is one of the most common questions that can also pop up either during an interview or during a performance review, he feels.

“Pay attention to how you work and solve problems”

It is very important that you identify your strengths, as this is helpful to you, as well as to your employer. Not only will it help your employers allocate your roles and responsibilities as per what you can do and are capable of, but it can also help you to determine what you are good at and what you need to work on, adds Faisal.

How To Identify Your Strengths

Making A Note Can Be The First Step

One of the easiest ways in which you can take a look at your workplace strengths, in an entirely literal way, is to sit down and jot down the positives that you feel you have in the professional world. If you are not sure about it, speak to your ex-colleagues or bosses, or even those who know you well. If this is going to be your first job, you can take cues from any big projects you have handled, while at college.

Pay Attention To What You’re Doing And How

According to Faisal, a simple way of identifying these strengths is to pay attention to yourself when you work and see how you solve problems and how you respond to deadlines or a new challenge or task. You should also see how you work with your team and whether the interactions are smooth or difficult, and more importantly, you also need to take a look at how you feel when you work or when you are handling specific tasks.

Faisal goes on to add that you can find out what interests you in your work, as this will help you establish areas you are good at and then see how you actually perform in them.

There can be various things that could define your strengths, such as your understanding of a particular software or way of work, the way you handle teams, the way you can speak to clients, the kind of training you have, and so on. Make sure to take it all into account before you decide what you’re good at and what isn’t right for you.
