Time and again, Bollywood keeps reaching out into the past for getting some inspiration for its music. We’ve seen old classics being revived with unwelcome twists many a time, and while they do find lots of popularity, they indeed manage to kill some part of the charm of the original song.

Halka Halka is a track from the upcoming multi-starrer Fanny Khan, which has been composed along the lines of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s classic qawwali Ye Jo Halka Halka. You can’t help but hate this remix trend even more when people like Amit Trivedi start participating in it. Yes, this song has been recreated by none other than the person who has given us albums like Lootera, Udaan, Kai Po Che and others.

If there is one consolation in Halka Halka, it’s the fact that it uses only one line from the original song’s chorus, while the rest of the parts include new lyrics. This track looks to invoke a romantic feel, and has been picturized on the pair of Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Rajkummar Rao.

Halka Halka has of course been composed by Amit Trivedi, while its lyrics have been penned by Irshad Kamil. The newly written lines which the song starts with are, “Main dekhoon jo tujhko to pyaas badhe. Tu roz, tu roz, do ghoont chadhe. Mujhse tu na mujhse kabhi bichhde. Tu roz, tu roz, do ghoont chadhe.”

These blend seamlessly with the original’s vibe, so Irshad deserves due credit here. However, the same cannot be said for the next few lines. “Yeh jo halka halka suroor hai. Yeh jo pehla pehla suroor hai. Tera ishq mera fitoor hai. Tera ishq hai ya fitoor hai. Maine khud ko tujh pe luta diya. Tera hoke khud ko mita diya.” This chorus fails to make much sense, and seems quite forced as well.

Anyone who has heard the original will understand the sheer reverie it subjects its audiences to. Nusrat sahab’s angelic voice delivers verse upon verse of romantic poetry playfully blaming the subject’s beauty to be the reason for his drinking habits. Amit Trivedi, along with singers Sunidhi Chauhan and Divya Kumar, is by no means able to recreate that magic.

Halka Halka hence turns into yet another bummer in the long list of remixes that are plaguing Bollywood music scene these days.
