Kishangarh History – Quick and Interesting Facts

Foundation

A Jodhpur Prince named Maharaja Samokhan Singh ruled the region before it was founded as a princely state by Kishan Singh in 1609. Maharaja Samokhan Singh lost against Mughal Emperor Akbar and his grandson Nasubat Khan was kept under house arrest. Kishan Singh was a distant relative of Maharaja Samokhan Singh.

Location

Jodhpur touches the north and northwest borders of Kishangarh. Jaipur touches the eastern border of the state while Ajmer is on its west and south east. Shahpura lies to the south of Kishangarh.

Genesis

The chiefs of Kishangarh were from the Rathore clan of Rajputs. Kishan Singh was a descendent of Udai Singh of Jodhpur. He got the regions of Hindaun, Setholao and other districts from Akbar. The Kishangargh town was formed in 1611. Kalyan Singh was the chief of Kishangargh who ruled from 1797-1832. During his reign, on 26th March 1818, Kishangarh became a Princely state under Rajputana Agency of the British rule.

Interesting Facts

The Kishangarh State earned Rs.34,000/- every year during the colonial period but paid no tribute to the British Raj. Prithvi Singh became the 15th Maharaja of Kishangarh who ruled from 1840 until his death in 1879. His son Sardul Singh was one of the successors of Kishangarh dynasty.

Maharaja Madan Singh was considered as one of the most hardworking and promising kings in the history of Kishangarh. He came into power in 1900 at the age of 16, at a time when the state was hit by a horrible drought. He undertook irrigation projects and set up factories for ginning and pressing cotton. He also discouraged spending too much money on marriages, which had a positive effect on economy.

Brijraj Singhji is the current Maharaj of Kishangarh. Tourists from all across the country come down to see the beautiful palace-hotel called PhoolMahal. Kishangargh Fort is surrounded by a canal that was built by Kishan Singh. The city also has a large lake known as the Gond Talav, on the banks of which, tourist destinations like Mukham Vilas and Bhairu Ghat are situated.
