Chaospet: A philosophical comic.

An “Existential Terror and Breakfast” Companion:

With this week’s Mr. Square Comic and entry to my web serial Existential Terror and Breakfast now up I am wrapping things up with another suggested philosophy webcomic. What’s that? Oh, you thought there couldn’t possibly be more of those and that “philosophy webcomic” cannot possibly be a genre? Ha! We are just dipping our toes my friend. This week we have the one and only Chaospet.

Chaospet has been on the internet for a decade now, and it has an archive that is in the hundreds. The artwork is simplistic but it gets the job done as most of the strips try to convey a Philosophical concept or thought experiment in a humorous light so the word bubbles do most of the heavy lifting. This is not a negative aspect of the comic, however, as arguably a more complicated series of artwork might complicate an already complicated line of thinking. Simplicity here is king. One of my favorite comics involves the “Solipsist Club“. It is a single panel, in black in white, and it does not need to be any grander than it is.

The biggest difference between this comic and those of Dead Philosophers in Heaven or Existential Comics is that instead of staring different well-known philosophers it centers around the creator’s own characters. This is a nice change of pace as it demonstrates that a comic based around philosophical ideas does not have to rely on that specific formula or shtick. On a larger scale this means that this genre of webcomics has more elasticity than I had previously thought.

Chaospet is run by someone with a PhD in philosophy (Ryan Lake). What this means for the comic (other than the fact that there is some credibility behind it) is that newer or more modern philosophical ideas and discussions are being had in it. This makes the comic more topical than the other two and means that it can be inspired by current events or by the current philosophical discourse.

Chaospet is updated “every day that it is updated”.

“Existential Terror and Breakfast” Updates every Wednesday, Its “Companion Piece” updates every Thursday.
