Things To Know Before You Visit To Glamis

If you are in search of a perfect spot for a weekend adventure in the Sand Dunes, then Glamis is the perfect spot for you. The sand dunes of Glamis are full of fantastic action, high-power thrills and beautiful views to enjoy with friends and family members. Although ,at first, the sand dunes might seem like an endless place of sand, there are several things you and your family can do during your trip.

Geographically known as the Algodones Dunes, the Imperial Sand Dune Recreation Area is one of the largest sand dune masses in California and the largest OHV recreation area for sand dunes in the country. The dunes spread out around forty miles long, six miles wide, and reach up to three hundred feet tall. It encompasses approximately 118,000 acres that are open to OHV recreation.

Additionally, there are various camping areas scattered all around the dunes. The majority of people camp in RVs or enjoy ATV , and some even tent camp. Also, you can rent an RV from Glamis RV Rental in California. Although, facilities can be extremely limited with mainly only vaulted toilets available, because of the desert.

Basically, these sand dunes are located in California’s Imperial County at the south end of the state. Just by the border of Arizona to the east and Mexico to the south, and located west of the Chocolate Mountains. The northwestern end of the sand dunes is about 11 miles east of Calipatria, whereas the southeastern end is near Los Algodones in Mexico, about 6 miles west of Yuma, Arizona.

Here are the names of several popular dunes or hills that run north to south and places where you can visit and enjoy your time in Glamis:

  • Competition Hill : A small dune which used to be a spot for gathering back in older times.
  • Oldsmobile Hill: This is one of the best sand dunes of choice, which is the replacement for Competition Hill for many people. It is a big dune where many people gather to hang out all day long.
  • Brawley Slide: It is a side hill off from Olds to meet up with friends.
  • Lizard Hill: Like the Oldsmobile, Lizard Hill is one of the major dunes that gets a lot of action.
  • China Wall: The hill of all the hills, it seems like it is straight up and down and goes forever.
  • Gordon’s Well or Dune Buggy Flats: Camping area at the south end, north of interstate 8.
  • Ogilby: Campground area at the south end, north of interstate 8
  • Osborne Overlook: Paved overlook and camping area off highway 78 that gives you a good view of the dunes.
  • Gecko Road: The road runs north and south along the west side of the dunes and is lined with camping spots. This is the road you first see when driving to Glamis. This is the sign that you have arrived. It is also a road where many people camp. The road just got paved, so it is nice and fresh. There are different pads where people can pull off to set up camp. Many people think of this as a high-dollar camping area for people who do not want to get their RVs dirty.
  • Wash Road: Runs north and south along the east side of the sand dunes and is lined by a bunch of numbered washes where people camp. Although in older days, this road was not groomed, even it was so bad that people used to stand up in their RVs and hold the cupboard doors closed so that all the pots and pans wouldn’t fall out. But now there are huge open areas where people camp circularly. It is on the opposite side of Glamis near the railroad tracks.
  • Glamis Beach Store: This place is best for any kind of grocery items that you might have forgotten at your home.
  • Vendor Row: In this area, which is right by the Beach Store, where you can find a burger, root beer float, tee-shirt, or UTV parts for your broken vehicle.
  • Duners Diner: Bar or restaurant that used to be called Pair a Dice. Located at the far south end just north of interstate 8. A destination ride to eat lunch.
  • Flag Pole: A memorial flag for the first action that was placed in the middle of the sand dunes behind Brawley Slide and Olds. It is a beautiful spot to relax, and many people use it as a resting spot.
  • Sand Highway: A popular route that runs east to west from Gecko road to the washes and also runs south from Gecko road along the west side. It is generally an easier way to travel in the due system without going through the dunes themselves. Also, many people like to take it because you have less chances of getting lost than traveling through the dunes.

So, get ready and pack your bags to enjoy your visit to the sand dunes of Glamis.
