Refugees who have begun the journey of fleeing from their home county have described challenging treks over rough terrain scattered with the bodies of those who died along the way. As per the reports, many of them died from exhaustion or were separated from their families.

The authorities have asked refugees to assemble at the bus station while local authorities prepare to register the new immigrants. Once concocted, they are either transported to another city, moved into a secured tent camp, or are deported to Afghanistan.

Iran treats about 1 million Afghan refugees who are listed with the United Nations and allowed to work in certain businesses. Afghans started appearing in large numbers after the 1979 Soviet incursion of their country.

Relief agencies and the United Nations say that as many as 3 million Afghans remain in Iran, most of whom are without any official documents and are uniquely exposed to economic and social conflict.

When the United States reimposed sanctions in 2018, Afghanis were among the first to experience the result. Imports fell, and prices soared. This put essential food items out of reach for many Afghan families. Business owners suspended payments to employees or laid-off workers, calling the decline in trade.
