How Much Hair Product Do You Really Need?

Tags: hair

Do you love using different Hair products to achieve different hair styles? The only problem with hair products is sometimes it can be difficult to determine how much or how little you should use. You want to use enough for it to work with your specific hair length and type, but you don’t want to use too much so you weigh down your hair and make it greasy or full of buildup. Here are some tips on how to use the right amount of hair product per type of product:

  1. When you apply mousse to your hair, you want every strand of your hair to be covered in product for maximum benefits. Divide your hair into at least four sections, depending on how much hair you have and how thick it is, and apply an egg-sized amount to each section of hair. After you work the mousse through your hair, you’ll want to brush it thoroughly and then style as usual.
  2. Hair gel. Hair gel is great for styling, defining curls and taming hair. But if you apply too much, your hair will become greasy and then likely hard and strange looking. If you have fine hair, a nickel size amount is usually enough. If you have coarse, curly or a lot of hair, you’ll probably need about a quarter size Special tip: if you apply a mist of water before putting in the gel, it will spread much more easily and not clump up.
  3. Hair wax or pomades. Hair wax or pomades are great for short hair and you don’t need much at all for maximum benefits. Start with a dime size amount and then rub it on your fingers. If your hair is short and straight, use quick motions to separate the hair and add texture. If your hair is curly, you’ll want to emulsify the product then coil your hair around your fingers to apply.
  4. Dry shampoo. Dry shampoo is great for keeping your hair clean in between shampoos. It removes excess oil from your hair. Spray near the roots, about one spray per four-inch section. Then rub into your hair and then brush through.
  5. Less is more when it comes to hair spray and setting your hair style. If you use too much, your hair will become hard. Just spray back and forth until you’ve reached your desired effect.
  6. Shine serums. If you want shiny hair and to get rid of frizz, shine serums are the way to go. However, if you use too much your hair can look oily and greasy. If you have fine hair, use a very small amount, less than a dime size. If you have thicker and coarse hair, you can use up to the size of a quarter.
  7. Hair masks. Hair masks are great for over processed, dry and damaged hair. If you have thick and dry hair, you can use hair masks up to the size of a small orange. If you have fine hair, use less and focus on the ends of your hair.
  1. Remember that generally less is more when it comes to hair products. You can always start with a very small amount and add more if needed. If you start with too much, you may have to wash your hair to get it back to where you want it. So be careful!
