Sitting Is The New Smoking

Greetings Goddesses, I just came across an article that hit me smack dead between the eyes…

Now, we can all agree in theory that spending most of our waking hours sitting can be hazardous to our health. But did you really consider just how bad it can be?

Take a look at these deleterious effects:

  • We’re averaging 9.3 hours a day sitting, compared to 7.7 hours of sleeping
  • After 1 hour of sitting, the production of enzymes that burn fat declines by as much as 90%
  • Lack of physical activity is directly tied to 6% of the impact for heart diseases, 7% for type 2 diabetes, and 10% for breast cancer, or colon cancer
  • The death rate associated with tobacco is 3.5 million, but the death rate associated with obesity is 35 million!

Wow, that’s some startling statistics. It’s like cold ice water in your face when you consider that sitting is so much a part of our societal norms we don’t even realize how much we do it.

You can read the full article over on the Harvard Business Review blog…

Until next time,

Be Well.
