Training on the Monkey Bars

Continuing with last months theme, I challenge you to practice your basic gymnastics skills and conditioning outside of the gym.

Today we’re Training on the monkey bars! Monkey Bars are a great place to strengthen your abs. (And if you’re “those parents”, you can join in and strengthen your core as well ;) ) I never realized quite how important it was to have strong abs for every (yes EVERY) skill in gymnastics until I had a slight tear in my abs heading into the 1994 World Championships. Think about those basic skills like a glide kip or giant swing and imagine trying to do them without strong abs! What about keeping that core strength so that you can stay on the beam and not wobble? Even when you’re not in the gym, you can work your abs so that these skills become easier, not only to perform, but to perform well. Take a look at my YouTube videos to get some ideas of how you can further your training and comment how you practice your basics outside of the gym!

Do you have questions about gymnastics you’d like to ask? Comment below (or in the video comments on Youtube) to let me know how you handle fear and if there is anything in the gymnastics world you want to know more about!
