Precautions to Take Before Using Abortion Pills

Precautions to take before using abortion pills

The medical Abortion is the process of terminating an early pregnancy which is within 10 weeks of gestation. If the pregnancy is confirmed to be intrauterine (embryo attached inside the uterus) and within the gestational limit, it is mostly ok to abort with Mifepristone and Misoprostol abortion pills.

Not all women, however, are suited to terminate medically. To be eligible for aborting through medication, there are few specifications that you must meet –

  • You must not have an ectopic pregnancy (outside the uterus)
  • You must not be taking long-term corticosteroids
  • You mustn’t be suffering, from heart disease liver/kidney disease or high blood pressure
  • You mustn’t have adrenal failure or a poorly controlled inflammatory bowel disease
  • You must not take anticoagulants
  • You should not be suffering from hemorrhagic disease of porphyria
  • You should avoid medical pregnancy termination if you have muscular dystrophies, myotonic dystrophy or sickle cell disease.

What are abortion pills?

The medication abortion is done in two stages with two different medicines.

  • The first pill used is called Mifepristone. It is an antiprogesterone agent which takes effect by blocking the hormone and thus stops the formation of uterine wall that keeps the embryo attached. In absence of this hormone, the embryo faces detachment.

Mifepristone is taken on the first day of the procedure in 200 mg dosage

  • After taking Mifepristone, take a mandatory break of a day or two. While most women who buy abortion pills are advised to take an interval of 24 hours, it is advised not to extend the interval beyond 48 hours.
  • After taking the interval, place four misoprostol pills, two by two in each side of the mouth. Let the pills liquefy for 30 minutes before swallowing anything that’s left.

What should be done to prepare for a medical abortion?                                                                                                          Some of the things to remember before starting the abortive process are –

  • If you have a cold or a sore throat, it is advisable that you postpone your appointment (if you are going to a clinic). As patients may be subject to assessment and you may be refused treatment if you’re assessed as not well enough.
  • Do not drink alcoholic beverages before and during the procedure. While going through the procedure you must have your full attention on following the instructions accordingly.
  • The procedure involves bleeding; therefore, it is necessary to take blood coagulant medication to control vaginal bleeding.

Light bleeding is common in the first trimester of pregnancy.

  • After taking both the pills, it is natural that you will experience stomach cramps and ache. You may want to take anti-inflammatory drugs as a precaution.
  • You may also feel nausea after taking the pills. Therefore, it is necessary that you keep an anti-emetic medication nearby.

If you buy abortion pill pack, you will get all three precautionary medications in one pack plus the abortion pills.

  • There are not many definitive symptoms of an ectopic pregnancy other than the afflicted may feel some pain on the side of her stomach. Therefore, as a precaution, a woman must make sure she is not ectopically pregnant.

If she has an ectopic pregnancy, she can opt for a suitable surgical procedure.
