How Long does Fertile Egg White Cervical Mucus Last

How long does egg white Cervical Mucus last before ovulation, after ovulation and during ovulation. Does egg white mucus mean ovulation. These are all important question asked by women trying to conceive.

When estrogen hormone is at its highest just before ovulation, a clear, stretchy and slippery fertile mucus is produced.

The progesterone hormone dries up Cervical mucus after ovulation. The progesterone hormone is released by the corpus luteum after ovulation.

Your mucus changes through out your menstrual cycle in response to the rise and fall of estrogen and progesterone hormone in your system.

What is Egg White Cervical Mucus(EWCM)?

Egg white cervical mucus is the most fertile cervical mucus or cervical fluid that you see when you are about to ovulate. It looks like raw egg white, it is clear, slippery, stretchy, thin and watery.

EWCM is very important if trying to get pregnant, because it:

  • EWCM makes the vaginal a sperm friendly environment
  • Aids the sperm in swimming easliy upwards into the uterus and fallopian tubes to fertilised an egg
  • Acts as lubrication during intercourse

The normal PH of the vaginal is acidic and makes it difficult for the sperm to survive in the reproductive organs.

But before ovulation, when estrogen levels are at the highest a slippery and stretchy clear mucus is produced. This is a way to know when you are fertile.

If you are avoiding to get pregnant then do not have unprotected sex.

Does Egg White Cervical Mucus mean ovulation?

Yes. Abundance of clear and stretchy cervical mucus means ovulation is around the corner.

Ovulation is the release of a matured egg from the ovaries. It usually happens around day 12- day 16 if you have a 28 day menstrual cycle for instance.

Tracking and checking your cervical mucus is one of the ways to predict ovulation.

As you approach ovulation, a sharp increase in the estrogen hormone causes more cervical mucus to be produced. When estrogen is at its highest the mucus discharge is abundant, watery, stretchy and slippery.

This rise in estrogen hormone trigger a luteinising hormone (LH) surge. When LH surge happens, a matured egg will be released from the ovary in the next 12-24 hours.

If trying to conceive, apart from fertility mucus charting, a more accurate way of predicting ovulation is using an ovulation test kit.

What does mucus discharge during ovulation Look Like and Feel Like

If you truly want to know what your most fertile mucus is, take a look at a real liquid egg white.

It is clear or transparent, stretchy, slippery, thin and watery. It looks like raw liquid egg white.

Pictures of Ovulation Mucus

Here are some more pictures of what fertile CM should look like:

The quantity and how stretchy it gets differs from woman to woman. Some women don't produce enough egg white mucus. And this could hurt their fertility.

How Many days of Egg white mucus before ovulation

Egg white cervical mucus occurs within one or two days before ovulation. This means when you get a slippery cervical mucus you should ovulate within the next 24 hours to 48 hours.

Egg white discharge dries up immediately after ovulation because after ovulation, the corpus luteum releases the progesterone hormone.

A day or two after ovulation, Cervical mucus is usually dry.

As progesterone hormone increases it produces a thick, pasty, sticky cervical mucus. The progesterone hormone reaches its peak around 5 to 9 days after ovulation.

Types of cervical Mucus

Dry Cervical Mucus

This is the cervical mucus produced after menstruation. Due to low levels of estrogen and progesterone hormone after your periods.

This means you are not fertile

Creamy Cervical Mucus

This is the cervical mucus secreted by the cervix days after your period is over.  It means you are infertile

Watery Cervical Mucus

This signifies you are in your fertility window. Gradual increase in estrogen hormone causes cervical discharge to be moist and less pasty.

Egg white cervical Mucus

This is the CM produced just before ovulation and during ovulation. This is called ovulation discharge and it means you are very fertile.

Sticky Cervical Mucus

The days after ovulation is known as dry, pasty, cream and sticky days.

Your cervical mucus acts as a mucus plug to prevent sperm from swimming into the uterus and fallopian tubes.

This is an infertile CM. It is impossible to conceive days after ovulation.

This is natures way of telling you, you're no longer fertile.

Can you get pregnant without egg white cervical mucous

It is possible to get pregnant when you are in your fertile window. Your fertile window is the 3-5 days before and including the day of ovulation.

An egg can only live for 24 hours after ovulation. But a sperm can survive 3-5 days in a woman's body.

Having sexual intercourse will increase your chances of conceiving because it means you are very fertile and it will make the vaginal less hostile to the spem.

But it is important to note that not all women are able to produce EWCM, all some women ever get is a watery CM.

You are still conceive with a watery CM as long as you are in your fertile days.

How to Increase EWCM

If trying to conceive it is recommended you increase your fertile mucus by doing any of the following.

1. Take FertileCM

2. Use Preseed Lubricant

3. Taking Robitussin

4. Taking Mucinex.

5. Take evening primrose oil

6. Stay Hydrated

7. Stay away from decongestants and allergy medicines.
