Discharge After Ovulation: Causes and What it Really Means

It is normal to have a egg white Discharge during ovulation as an indication that this is your most fertile day. After ovulation the discharge produced by the cervix is a non-fertile cervical mucus.

There are various reasons for a post ovulation discharge. Depending on if pregnant or if not pregnant, the discharge produced after ovulation may be a brown discharge, white discharge, watery discharge or egg white discharge.

It is also common to have a no discharge or a dry vagina after ovulation. So do not worry if you experience this.


Top Causes of Post Ovulation Discharge

1. Sign of Pregnancy

There are 2 types of discharges that you can have after ovulation, that indicates that you may be pregnant. 

Brown discharge after ovulation

A brown discharge 6 days or 7 days past ovulation is an indication of implantation bleeding. Implantation is the process by which the fertilised egg attaches itself to the walls of the uterus. Implantation bleeding looks like light bleeding, pink spots or browns spots of discharge. 

Implantation is also usually accompanied by lower abdominal cramps. It is important to know that not all women experience implantation bleeding or spotting as an early pregnancy sign. You may still be pregnant without feeling cramps or having any spots.

Leukorrhea

Leukorrhea is a white milky or creamy cervical mucus that is common in early pregnancy. It is produced at the cervix(neck of the womb) and it is usually odorless or has a mild smell.

After fertilisation occurs, The level of progesterone and estrogen starts increasing to support the new life. The progestrone hormone causes the lining of the uterus to thicken after ovulation and also helps the uterus to get thicker after conception has occured.

The estrogen hormones starts to rise after fertilisation to help the uterus grow and to maintain the uterine lining. All these hormonal changes causes an increase vaginal discharge most especially estrogen hormone.

2. Hormonal imbalnce

Hormonal imbalance is another cause of vaginal discharge after ovulation. Estrogen dominance after ovulation causes excessive vaginal discharge.

Normally the days after ovulation are sticky and dry days. The reason why many women experience no discharge after ovulation is because the egg-white slippery cervical mucus that makes the vagina super sperm friendly is no longer required. 

Normally after ovulation, the estrogen hormone starts to decline and the progesterone hormone starts to increase to thicken the uterus lining. If no fertilisation occurs, the progesterone hormones level also starts to decline which causes the uterine lining to be shed as your next period. Just before your period starts, the estrogen hormone starts to increase which causes a thick whitish discharge.

3. pms

Premenstrual symptoms are similar to early pregnancy symptoms.  This is because of the presence estrogen hormone  before a period and also if conception occurs after ovulation.

An increasing level of estrogen causes the cervix to secret a thin milky white or creamy discharge if pregnant. And if not pregnant a thick creamy discharge is produced few days or a week before period starts. Estrogen also cause breast tenderness and other early pregnancy symptoms.

4. Your Period is coming

As part of the premenstrual symptoms a whitish discharge after ovulation is a good indication that your period is coming. The discharge is normal if it does not cause any itching of the vagina opening or vulva and odorless. An abnormal discharge is usually associated by itching, foul smell and burning feeling when peeing or having sex.

5. Infection

If you experience an abnormal discharge days after ovulation that is excessive,itchy, smelly, yellowish, greenish then you may have an infection.

Yeast infection: A whitish discharge that is itchy is a yeast infection. Yeast infection is caused by an overgrowth of a fungus called candida in the vagina. Yeast infection also causes pain when urinating, during and after intercourse.

If you have been noticing  your vagina discharge is always itchy before your period start.  This may be caused by the presence of sugar in your vagina around your period that is triggered by the increasing level of estrogen hormone.

Bacteria Vaginosis: If you have a white, gray or yellow discharge that is associated with a strong fish smell then you have BV. BV is caused by having too much bad bacteria than good bacteria in the vagina.

Trichomoniasis: is a sexually transmitted disease that is caused by a protozoan discharge called trichomonas.  The symptoms of Trichomoniasis is a yellow or green discharge that may be thin, thick or even frothy. An unpleasant fish smell. Vagina itching and irritation. Painful sex and pain when peeing.

The cervical mucus after conception is usually white, creamy and odorless . After implantation has occurred, there is an increase level of discharge which is known as leukorrhea. This discharge is normal, if it is not itchy and has no odor. If you have a itchy or smell discharge, see a doctor immediately. Avoid getting over the counter medication if you suspect you may be pregnant.
