It gets HOT in New York in the summertime. I mean, it gets hot in spring too. The fall can be pretty warm as well. Add in humidity and your skin can become raw and prickly from the rivers of sweat. Thigh gap is largely unobtainable for, well, almost anyone who can’t carve out two hours a day to workout, so the dreaded ‘chub rub’ is an issue.
Between the friction and heat your thighs (and armpits and anywhere else where there’s skin) can go from uncomfortable to downright painful quickly. Ordinary talcum powder provides some relief but wears off quickly so you must reapply continuously throughout the day. And that powder gets everywhere leaving ghostly handprints all over your clothes.
Monistat Chafing Gel
Monistat Chafing Gel (check out here) was developed specifically to address these matters. Apply the gel to skin and it dries to a powder finish creating a protective barrier that prevents chafing.
When evaluating any product/service for the Fab Find Column I go to reviews on Amazon.com. You can’t always rely on reviews on company’s website. I’m sure more than few places simply delete negative reviews. The reviews for Monistat Chafing Gel were overwhelmingly positive. The handful of negative reviews seems to have only two complaints; that due to purchasing the gel from less than reputable place consumers were mislead with regards to size (told it was a 5 oz tube when it was clearly a 1.5 oz tube) or had broken safety seals.
I also discovered people were using the product for a creative off-label reason. Monistat Chafing Gel’s main ingredient is dimethicone a silicon-based ingredient that is also used in makeup Primer such as Smashbox’s Photofinish Makeup Primer. For those of you not familiar, primer is used as a base to create a smooth surface for makeup and ensures makeup won’t budge no matter how sweaty or oily your skin gets. People swear the effect on their skin is identical with both products, but there is one major difference:
- Smashbox Primer retails for $36.00 an ounce
- Monistat Chafing Gel costs between $6 and $8 dollars for a 1.5 oz tube.
All in all, as Finds go this one is indeed fab! Sold at most drugstores or you can buy it online but don’t risk buying from unverified sources.
