Don’t Call It A Comeback: Give Me ALL The Overalls

I’ve been seeing overalls pop up again, you guys. Can I get a hooray? No? Well, well. If you’ve followed me over the last three years here at TME, then you know that I love overalls. I know they’re not everyone’s jam, but they are mine. I’ve been on a bit of an overall hiatus, but they’re back. Or, I’m bringing them back because why would we leave them in the first place? I have no idea. Quite a few styles keep selling out right now, too, so I’m not the only one calling it a comeback.

There is a trick to styling overalls so that one doesn’t venture into costume territory (not that this Aquarian doesn’t love a good costume), but for everyday wear there are some things to keep in mind. I’ve styled my current skinny overalls three ways here to give you some ideas for venturing into your own. They are a little less forgiving than my less fitted black pair I love, but these are adorable and flattering, and once you figure out styling, they become a new wardrobe fav.

Overalls Outfit 1: A Long Wool Coat & Sneakers

What I like about this combo is balancing out the skinny fit, one-piece overall with a longer, more preppy wool coat. Throw in some really sporty sneakers and BOOM! — you have a well-rounded look that isn’t too young-looking or too forced into any one style. That’s always my jam. Mix up the unexpected.

Outfit Details

Coat – Mine is older J.crew, but I’m also digging the Everlane Cocoon coat because it’s the loveliest shade of camel. I’m reviewing it soon.

Overalls – Free People Slim Overalls – I’m loving these. They are very flattering and TTS. There’s plenty of stretch, which I personally have to have in overalls. The ankle length is great on me. I might hem them a bit, just a raw hem, but they aren’t bad as-is. 5’4″ for reference. Size 27.

Sweater (similar) – The main thing here is a cropped sweater that doesn’t have much bulk to tuck in. Mine is sold out, but loving this one from Free People.

Sneakers – Some of my most-worn shoes. Love. TTS

Hat (similar) – I knitted mine, and I highly recommend taking up the hobby, but this one is similar if you wanna just buy one (lazy). Haha. J/k.

Overalls Outfit 2: A Printed Sweater, Chelsea Boots & A Leather Jacket

This outfit is fun because it adds a touch of glam and a touch of black leather to an otherwise typically casual piece. Again, bringing in some items that traditionally wouldn’t ‘go with’ denim overalls is our goal. This sweater is actually a cardigan. Just button it up and voila. Use what you have that is patterned or bright for a similar look.

Outfit Details

Leather jacket– My favorite. I wear a US 6. I highly recommend investing in a piece like this. It will (and has already) last for years. I’ve noticed the lower priced ones I’ve gotten I a): rarely wore and b): have passed on.

Overalls – Free People Slim Overalls – I’m loving these. They are very flattering and TTS. There’s plenty of stretch, which I personally need in overalls. The ankle length is great on me. I might hem them a bit, just a raw hem, but they aren’t bad as-is. 5’4″ for reference. Size 27.

Sweater (similar) – What is fun here is the print. Maybe leopard isn’t your thing…you could easily do a floral sweater, polka dots, or even just a bright color, but I like how the leopard steps up the overalls a notch.

chelsea boots – After much searching for the right black boot, I went with these. And I’m never disappointed. They’re chic and London-inspired and wearable, but cool. TTS.

scarf (similar) – I’d love to get a more oversized black scarf, but what I like about this is that it breaks up the overalls a bit here, and adds some depth and interest to the outfit. Overalls need something to do that since they’re all one piece.

Overalls Outfit 3: A Sheer Top, Overcoat & Combat Boots

This may be my favorite combo. When would I wear this? Well, any day actually, but to any casual event, running errands around the city, getting my haircut, brunch with friends. But that’s just me.

Overcoat (similar, same brand) – This piece has been an unexpected favorite in my closet for the last year or so. It has that London/city vibe I love, it’s great to layer over almost anything for stepping up your outfit a notch. When you need a longer layer to do proportion play (i.e., overalls, cropped flares, jeans with high tops) it’s always there for you. It hasn’t let me down.

Size 27.

Lace top (similar, loving color Truffle) – This has also been an incredible layering piece. I even wore it under a tee for our style challenge last year. It makes these overalls a little sexier, but this covered is about as sexy as I go. Haha.

combat boots – If you’ve been around this fall, you know these are my favorite boots for making any outfit cooler. Again, if leopard isn’t your thing (why not?), you could still rock a black combat boot here and it would totally work.

scarf (similar) – I’d love to get a more oversized black scarf, but I like that this breaks up the overalls a bit, and adds some depth and interest to the outfit. Overalls need something to do that since they’re all one piece.
