Lingerie Patrol: Met Gala 2018 – The Secrets Under the Statements

The Met Gala red carpet is the place to look for gaudy fashion and social statements – from over-the-top gowns to elaborate suits by some of the most premier designers in the world. This year’s theme was “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination,” and the Costume Institute did not disappoint.

The most notable trends included brightly colored and bejeweled gowns, elaborate, sparkling headpieces and tons of jewelry. As beautiful and elaborate as the fashion on the red carpet was, there was one unsung hero holding all the flawless looks together: the lingerie. With sheer, strapless, strappy and – to say the very least – complicated get-ups, finding the right lingerie for the Gala can be just as challenging as putting together your entire look.

We’ve delved into four of our favorite fashion statements from the 2018 Met Gala, looked at the particular challenges they present, and discovered what works underneath them – and they’re all available at HerRoom.

Amanda Seyfried: Prada Couture

The Look

Channeling Shakespeare’s Juliet in a Vatican yellow couture Prada Renaissance-esque off-the-shoulder gown, Amanda Seyfried showed off her trim figure (and right shoulder).

What’s Underneath

This one-shoulder style would require a strapless underwire bra with convertible straps, such as the Wacoal The Red Carpet Strapless Full-Busted Underwire Bra. This bra could be worn under a one-shoulder style with one or two of the shoulder straps on the left side to provide extra lift and support. It has several tab options to help keep the straps in place and hidden. The underwire helps keep everything in place and lifted.

Katharine McFee: Georges Chakra

The Look

Katharine McPhee wore a gorgeous, slightly sheer baby blue Georges Chakra gown with heavy jewelry by VSA Designs.

What’s Underneath

Underneath, Katharine wore the Commando Classic Control Brief, which provides the right amount of coverage – not too little, not too much – and is tastefully subtle. The soft, micro-fiber material and the smoothing shape is perfect for a dress with a sheer skirt.

Olivia Munn: H&M Conscious Collection

The Look

Olivia Munn chose a gold chainmail H&M Conscious Collection dress and a Michael Schmidt headpiece, which was inspired by the crusades.

What’s Underneath

She managed the sheerness of the dress and the high slit in the leg with the Commando Tiny Thong, which achieved an invisible look and feel. This laser-cut panty is so light and comfortable, you’ll feel like you’re not wearing anything at all.

Cara Delevingne: Dior Haute Couture

The Look

In a fishnet Dior Haute Couture dress made of sheer paneling and a cross-stitch pattern, Cara Delevingne topped off her confession box inspired look with a headpiece with a hanging face shade and crown detail.

What’s Underneath

Cara gets the right amount of coverage with the Commando Bikini Panty. The laser=cut edges prevent any lines and the soft, comfortable fabric makes wearing this panty for long periods of time comfortable.

At this year’s Met Gala, sheer styles with subtle coverage, support and lift stole the show. Commando panties pulled together some of the more challenging looks, along with strapless and convertible bras. You can find these styles – and more – at HerRoom.com.
