Play With Colours – How to Master the Art

Colours play a gorgeous role in this amazingly creative and mesmerizing world of fashion. Every shade and every Tone have its own power to express different moods, passions, feelings, links, and responses.

We all have a strong liking towards some colours, but those may not be the best ones for us. Everybody has an exclusive set of colours that suit them the most and another set that does not suit them at all.

On a simpler note, a good colour choice can make a design and a bad colour choice can just break it. Synchronizing the right colours is a skill. Though no one is born knowing how to mix and match the colours, but, it can be learned.

Let’s see how.

  1. Understand the Colour wheel

“All colours are the friends of their neighbours and the lovers of their opposites” – Artist Marc Chagall

This quote of Marc Chagall refers to the 12-part colour wheel. “Friends” refer to the colours that are next to each other. And, “Lovers”are the ones that are directly opposite to each other on the wheel.

  • Colour Family– Every segment on the colour wheels shows the colour family of that specific hue. To keep it in the family, match cool tones with cool tones, warm tones with warm tones, pastels with pastels, etc.
  • Complimentary ColoursComplimentary actually means “opposite.”, for example Black and White, And I am sure that you know why they look so great together. Don’t you? Well!! Opposites attract.
  1. Know your colour profile

There are only two undertones: – warm and cool. To know your skin’s undertone, do a vein test. Check the veins on your wrist. If you have green-looking veins, you have a warm tone and it is cool if your veins look blue or purple,

For the warm skin tones, the best colours are red, peach, coral, gold and yellow. If you have a cooler skin tone, choose blues, emeralds and purples.

  1. Convey with the Colours

Earth tones and warm colours make you look approachable. Bright reds are for attention seekers. Dark, monochromatic colours reflect a powerful personality. Wear muted or pale colours if you do not want people to notice you.

  1. If in doubt, wear Black & White

With Black and white, you can never go wrong. They are very clever colours which create their own pattern.

P.S. – The best colour in the world is the one that suits you.
