MY VISIT TO GODRIC’S HOLLOW

Godric’s Hollow is a fictional village in England featured in the books and film series as the birthplace of both Harry Potter and his wizarding headmaster, Albus Dumbledore.

Although Godric’s Hollow is fictional, it was based on a real place – Lavenham in Suffolk. Described by The Guardian as ‘one of the most beautiful small towns in Britain’, it was chosen as the location for scenes in Godric’s Hollow.

I am a massive Harry Potter’s fan and I have already attended ‘The making of Harry Potter’ Warner Bros Studio Tour in Watford, visited Platform 9 3/4 at the Kings Cross Station in London and The Wizarding World of Harry Potter in both Orlando and Los Angeles.  As I don’t live far from Lavenham, it was time to pay a visit and check out this famous location.

The Guildhall and De Vere house were both used as CGI (Computer-Generated Imagery) backdrops in Godric’s Hollow in ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1’.

The more famous of the two, grade 1-listed De Vere House is a 14th-century cottage once owned by Britain’s second to the royal family in terms of wealth and very powerful De Vere family. But its fame comes from modern fiction as this was the place where Harry Potter was born, where Lord Voldemort killed his parents, gave him his famous scar and at the same time inadvertently made him a horcrux.

De Vere House is the second most photographed doorway in the whole of the UK, after number 10 Downing Street, and is currently on sale for just under £1m with Carter Jonas. Whoever buys the house will have to put up with the tourists taking pictures outside but the house may also be haunted by the ghosts of Lily and James Potter!

Lavenham it is often referred to as ‘England’s finest medieval village’ and not without reason.

Full of half-timbered and colourful medieval cottages, Lavenham is a truly magical place and I felt like I was really walking through Godric’s Hollow. I must say it’s the most beautiful village in the UK that I have visited so far. It must be magical as although it’s in the UK, there was a clear blue sky and glorious sunshine! I am going on holiday to Lake District with my friend in a few days and we will be watching all Harry Potter films as she has never seen them! Harry Potter books and films have always had a special place in my heart. They teach us about some of the most important values in life – friendship, loyalty, love, equality and that “We’ve all got both light and dark inside us.
