MARIA CALLAS; SEE HOW TO WEAR HER STUNNING CLASSIC STYLE

MARIA Callas AND HER STUNNING STYLE

First I want you all to know that I love a good aria , and no one sang one better than Maria Callas. The film  "Maria by Callas " had a premier at Tiff ( Toronto International Film Festival ) last month.

For the first time, 40 years after her death, the most famous opera singer ever tells her own story – in her own words. Featuring previously unknown footage, unseen photographs, personal Super 8 films, private live recordings, intimate letters and rare behind-the scenes archival footage for the first time in color .
What I would like to stress is that as well as being a legendary diva , Maria Callas was an amazing fashion diva.

VALENTINO PAYS HOMAGE TO MARIA CALLAS

Long live the diva, especially the grandest operatic diva of them all, Maria Callas. Certainly this tribute was evident when Valentino held it's Fall couture show in July . With Callas in full-throated glory on the speakers, beginning with an aria by Puccini, the first models appeared with Big Big Hair, sweeping across the parquet in massive gowns. When looking at these fabulous couture gowns by Valentino designer Pierpaolo Piccioli the evidence that Maria Callas was partially his muse for this collection is unmistakeable.

What is Maria Callas renown for throughout the world beside her inimitable voice? Some would say the anguished love story with millionaire Aristotele Onassis. But I'd rather remember her as the true style icon she was. Because the unforgettable opera singer was able to charm crowds appearing exquisitely divine on every single occasion.

Fashion helped to define Callas as a Diva. After a dramatic weight loss in 1953, her confidence and her career skyrocketed. She wore camera-ready clothing in keeping with a star’s persona: exquisitely tailored dresses and suits, evening gowns, sumptuous furs, and sparkling jewelry. With her fashionably small waist and well-defined facial features, she embodied the ideals of 1950s glamour. Yves Saint Laurent called her the “diva of divas, empress, queen, goddess, sorceress, hard-working magician, in short, divine.Today, fashion keeps her image alive through recordings played on the runway. Therefore homages in collections by Valentino, Galliano and Dolce and Gabbana, have payed tribute to the style of the Diva.

MARIA CALLAS; FASHION ICON

After her weight loss she became every couturier’s dream. Callas somehow managed to shed the pounds without gaining loose skin. Moreover she looked like she had been born with her new figure. In fact moving in it with a natural grace and confidence.

Callas had a long torso and short legs – a far cry from anything modelesque. But in being dressed by Dior and leading Milanese designer, Elvira Leonardi Bouyeure, she found her style. Certainly she began to prescribe a more accessible sense of sophistication for the average woman.

Callas quickly shot up to fashion iconicism. At the time, she was revered as the alternative Jackie Onassis . Moreover she had a more relatable figure that oozed sex in a way that women could identify themselves with.

Her very strong facial features were somewhere between Greecian and Italian. When put together with Parisian couture, Callas became the quintessential European style icon.  At the same time she became the world’s first renowned diva.

MARIA CALLAS OPERATIC TRAGEDY

Many say her dramatic weight loss led to a loss of her vocal strength and breath support. Her voice began to deteriorate, and her performances became increasingly sporadic. But her affair with Aristotle Onassis had already catapulted her into an elitist social league. Therefore the vocal loss was cushioned for the time she spent more in nightclubs and private jets than concerto halls!

Her relationship with Onassis lasted nine years and ended when he married Jackie Kennedy in 1968. She never recovered , melting away into isolation and passing away at the age of 53 alone in her apartment.

The saddest thing however, was that her personal tragedy always overshadowed Callas as the artist and style icon. While she is revered as the first diva style icon, and remains as one of classical music’s best-selling vocalists. However many are quicker to label Callas as Onassis’s other woman.

To this day, though, Callas continues to inspire. At the present time Callas is having a bit of a resurgence. Significantly the film Maria By Callas has introduced her to a much younger audience. While many young women of today emulate the style of Audrey Hepburn , many are unaware of Maria Callas. Here I hope to inspire you to reflect on this artist and her amazing impact on  style .
